To The Happy Murcia, I stand corrected.
It was Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding, Although I have a large monitor I sometime's make mistakes due to the fact I am registered partially sighted.

Happy Murcia is correct. It was "Dowding..." And, While it ws on the down hill swing by 1940, it was EXTREMELY popular when he was still making his way up through the ranks. Just look at Sir Arthur Conan Doyle...

I/m not even a military man, I'm just a dumb blonde and I know that. He was even a member of the Spiritualist Associate of Great Britain. Just like little old dumb blonde me.

As was Sir Arther Conan Doyle. Na na na

Edit:- Yes and I agree with that cute littlemissvampie below, what about military women?? You tell 'em vamp. Lots of us have fought for our country, just like me. And I'm proud of it. And I was not some sort of girly make believe person. I was a hand held weapons specialist and instructor. No I wasn't in the airforce and can't fly a jet
