In my mind, the only time one might ever be entitled to be an a**hole is if the other person acted that way first, but it's still not a classy thing to do.
I would tell people like that "I'm sorry, but I'm a lifeguard, and I have been instructed not to be concerned with the groundskeeper's duties, as someone could drown if I take my attention away from the pool even for a few seconds. I will be glad to mention the problem to management for you though."

I work at a country club pool grill and both the people who work with me and the lifeguards have to deal with that on a daily basis. I don't understand! That is not any of our jobs. If they would rather get their food in a timely manner and have lifeguards that are paying attention, they should stop whining. Everyone is so snobby!

Life is not fair and not everyone in it is nice. If life were fair no kid would ever be abused and rich people would always tip and be nice. NONE of that is true, some poeple just are idiots. Do what you are supposed to do, your job description is what you need to do. If someone, not your boss, tells you about the trash, just say thank you and ignore it, unless you are supposed to be picking it up. If they say something about you not picking it up, say NICELY that you are lifeguard and your attention needs to be on the pool. Of course if they then see you talking and not paying attention, your job is in danger!

It's a free Country.
If you are an asshole, be one.
Then the other people who live in this free Country can chose to wipe you out of their life because, being an asshole, you stink.

Take the high road and pay it forward. It won't hurt you, and it may set a good example that ends up helping you in the long run. Be brave and do the right thing!

it doesnt give anyone the right to do that. next time tell them where the garbage can is and that you can't be distracted from the water, you are a lifeguard and not their maid.

i would tackfully explain to any one who gripes about trash rather a little bit or a lot that it is you job to save lifes and not to be a grounds keeper. you might also suggested that they help keep the grounds clean by teaching their children and others to use the trash cans.

Obviously, it doesn't. Some people just live that way; it's an unpleasant fact of life with which you must learn to cope.
