If you have a legal paper that states your name has changed, you *should* be ok. However, I wouldn't want to take a chance on something THIS important.
Actually, I think, US government would be the least of your problem. If you have a government issued paper that says why your name is now different, they are reviewing their own paper (sort of speak) to verify the information. But, the foreign government is under no obligation to take anything other than the passport into considerations. They can deny enterance based on the fact your passport does not bear your new real name.
The only way to be sure is to contact the State department and the embassey of the respective country and get their formal opinion in writing and carry that with you, too.

It depends on how different the name is. My Russian friend Spells her name Aliona, but on her passport it says Alena. The last name is the same. On her bank account and phone bill she uses the name on her passport so there is no confusion.
But in your case since all your other documents are in another name I would highly recommend that you check with the passport agency so that you don't have any trouble once you're abroad. they are most likely going to have to issue you a new passport since your name on your SS# has changed. If you're in a hurry you can get you're passport expedited and it will come in the mail sooner than usual. I had mine done and I got it in about four weeks.

I don't know all of the details, but this might help. I work for an airline and as long there is a difference of 3 letters or less you can call them up and have them put a message to the check in staff that will let them know and it will be no problem. If they name is completely different you'll have a big problem. Even if it doesn't happen to every person sometimes you can get held up pretty bad. I personally wouldn't want to take the chance get it fixed quickly.

if you have had a formal name change, it needs to be reflected in your passport. if your passport does not match your other id, it will cause problems. check with your nearest passport acceptance facility on what is need for doing a name change.

I have my passport in my maiden name, and my tickets are always purchased in my married name. I always carry proof of both identities and have never had a major problem. I DID have to explain my whole "was married, got divorced, got married again" story one time, but because I had credit cards in both names they had no problem with me.

Yes, absolutely. If your name doesn't match, then it's not legal identification. You need to get a new passport that matches your other pieces of id.

Just take the papers that show how and why your name was changed and you should be alright. Like if you have a court order or something.
