I've never heard of a gaming router. A router is like an intersection for cars, all it does is forward traffic along. They are so fast at doing this that upgrading performance of them is negligible. You didn't mention what ISP you have, I suspect the problem lies there. Most broadband ISPs share bandwidth so you have no control if the connection is slow.

Ping is a message you send out to test connectivity with another IP device. There are lots of things that effect the delay and the router local you to isn't likely to make much difference.

Think of the Internet like a road system. Assume for a second there was no speed limit. You might be able to drive real fast in your neighborhood (your LAN), but when you get out on the highway you have to compete with lots of other cars, and if your going to a real popular place the traffic can get all backed up getting to it. Pretend your game server is like a sporting event - lots of people are trying to get there.

Also, the game server has to respond to your ping and everyone elses. So not only are there delays just getting the ping there, the game server has to queue up it's replys. The primary goal of the game server is to play the game, therefore responding to pings isn't probably high the priority list. I'd be willing to bet that most of the delay is due to the game servers latency in responding.

Try connecting to the server during an off time, like maybe 4AM - I suspect you ping times are smoking then.

PS ----

DSL for the most part - sucks. Get cable or FIOS. That would help your ping times more than a new router.
