The atonement of Jesus Christ means that those who accept his paying the price of sin are by faith made new. The wages of sin is death and all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Christ did pay he penalty of death for us.Those who accept the atonement are by faith baptized into his death and resurrected with him in his glory. We are by faith made new and will be literally transformed when we are literally reborn. We are no longer under law but by faith made new and in agreement with God's righteousness. Free to worship God in spirit and truth.

Atonement of sins by the blood of Jesus in my view as a Muslim has a basic misunderstanding of sin itself.
What is sin but disobedience to the Almighty deliberately? The first sin happened when the Lord gave FREE WILL and also gave his COMMAND to DO or NOT DO!! Had God not ordered us to do this or not do that or had He not given us free will, in either case sin would not exist. Sin was the consequence of giving free will and commands. This allowed a separation of the obedient from the disobedient.
The Lord knew there were people like Abraham, who would be willing to sacrifice their only son born at a very advanced age in their lives and still obey Him Almighty, in preference to all the Worldly attractions. Thus The Lord HAD TO CREATE FREE WILL and COMMANDS as He knew great and obedient people would be born and obey Him against the heaviest of odds.
The consequence of this FREE WILL and COMMANDS was sin for those who would disobey Him. But the good Lord could not in all justice deny the good the opportunity to be close to Him because people would sin as a consequence of the free will and commands.
A tiger or a lion that kills an innocent herbivore does so in total innocence too. It sheds blood, but it is not held accountable by the Most High for the killing. Why? because the tiger is not given free will, nor given any commands of dos or donts.
If Jesus indeed died for all the sins of everyone, then everyone should be forgiven by the Holy One, as He already exacted a price for all sins according to this line of thinking and there is no point in stressing whether someone accepts the sacrifice of Jesus or not.
If I paid for all the people in a restaurant at a given time, but if I left the note with the restaurant owner to charge those people who do not accept my gift two times, I am not being fair. Nor would it be right for the restaurant owner to exact two prices for the same meal.
These are my two bits, and I hope some good Christian can clarify these things for me. I do not mean to offend anyone. I am just giving you my views.
By the way I love Jesus Christ as a grand Prophet and a Prophet of Mercy, the final one sent to the Nation of Israel. I love the Lord Most High the maker of Jesus with all my heart and soul and I fear Him as He is Just and I am a sinner, but I bank on His Mercy. How can one who tells us to be merciful can deny us mercy?
If Jesus indeed is the son of god or god, then my only folly is that the two I love and honor are one and the same and I did not know that or accept it. However, what if Muslims and Jews are correct, and Jesus is a mere man. What will become of the Christians who have put another god in front of the Jealous Lord who taught there is no god but ONE LORD.
Hear O Israel, the Lord is ONE!! What more powerful statement can there be than this one?
Peace.

Atonement means: (Merriam Webster Dictionary)
1 To make obsolete a prior offense through RECONCILIATION
2 : the reconciliation of God and humankind through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ
3 : reparation for an offense or injury : SATISFACTION
4 Christian Science : the exemplifying of human oneness with God
The sacrifice of Christ ended the spiritual separation of God and all mankind. Through the death and resurrection of Christ anyone can have an up close and personal relationship with God. Before that, only people whom God chose could do that and then only those whom He specifically called out.

Je is French for I. Su(i)s is French for be. Christ, is of course a request to Crucify.
So "I being French; crucify (me)." Is what a Roman (Pagan Roman), Arab derivative Royal (as were the Norman French) or Hun derived Judicial wants to hear. First he would like an excuse, secondly, he likes knowing that all others are too ignorant to threaten him personally, thirdly it is a lighter point in the day, a piece of hilarity that makes any such bastard happy and smug in his superiority, and fourthly well, why not teach us to make fun of ourselves rather than the despots? (This from the despot's point of view mind you; I personally think you are all brilliant and know all of this but would die rather than hurt a judge's feelings, as they are such infant terrible, aren't they?)
So an atonement of asking for it would be to get it?

Under the OT Covenant, people sacrificed animals to atone for sin; not forgiveness, but sins were (for lack of a better term) rolled forward. When Jesus sacrificed Himself, our sins were forgiven; not atoned for but wiped out. His blood covered all the sins of man that had been 'rolled forward' and all the sins to come.

Simply stated, God allowed the sacrifice of an innocent person (Jesus did this voluntarily!) to cover (or atone for) the sins of the guilty.
Another way of looking at the word "Atonement" is to break it down into sections: "at one-ment", making us at one with God, or reconciling us to God.
I hope this helps.

It means that the bloody death of a magical carpenter 2,000 years ago somehow gets you off the hook with God for your own personal misdeeds.
