Probably the same thing that makes you complacent about the massacre in Rwanda or the atrocities in Darfur.
Isn't it time you got your house in order before appointing yourself judge of the world?

Well I have a fish on my car and for the record my unborn daughter is half Jewish. Europe was complacent because they didn't want their country to be the next Hitler attacked... I do not think anyone truly supported the slaughtering of the Jews...Hitler was a mad Man...not a man that was sent to earth from God..he was a man that used people and things and religion to promote what he wanted..I also do not think that all of Europe was totally enlightened on what was really going on as far as the Jews were concerned I do not think they understood the full magnitude of what Hitler was doing until the war was over. I think they were scared and that they were doing what they had to do to try not being invaded and the leaders were trying to prevent war in their own countries.

anti-semitism was around in Europe long before the Nazi's. Persecution came in waves, sometimes severe sometimes mild.
When the Nuremburg laws were enacted prior to the war and Kristalnacht occurred- the Nazi's got a good idea about the type of reaction they would get from the world- which was pretty severe and brought universal condemnation. In fact the Nazi's knew treatment of Jews was a sensitive subject and during the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, completely relaxed anti-semitic actions, signs and media as a means to not agitate the International community.
All out systematic murder of Jews did not reach its epic proportions until the actual war-
Hitler had conquered most of Europe by then,
-in which case the Allies were powerless to stop it- where the shame lies is in the failure to allow Jews to emigrate prior to the war except for small quantities.

I don't know if you noticed but there was a war going on. Most people had their own lives to worry about. Germans were occupying a lot of Europe. There were food shortages. The Germans weren't exactly advertising the fact that they were systematically slaughtering the jews.

The same apathy that keeps an average Jewish person in Israel oblivious of the murders of the Palestinians and other Arabs. The same care a foot attitude that kept the Europeans oblivious to the murder of the Muslims in Bosnia. The same careless attitude of Muslims display about the murders in Sudan of the nonMuslims.
People on all sides are by and large asleep, unless someone really wakes up their conscience... that is kills or hurts some of their "own". THAT is the irony of all mankind.
Every group draws a circle of US and THEM and no one seems to see all people as fellow human beings and works for justice for all. Until people get out of their individual coccoons, the murder of the innocent will continue on.
Most people are responsible for some murders that took place in the World. That is why I am so afraid how the Just One will deal with all of us!!
May He guide us and show us mercy, which may not deserve!! Amen.

Hitler blamed the JEWS for the problems of Germany and the terror HE was orchestrating (like burning the Reichstag).
The Germans felt safer while the Jews were put away in concentration camps.
The Europeans had their own dislike of Non Christians anyhow.
History is repeating itself in America while everyone screams Never Again !

It was kept secret. The German people themselves didn't know what was going on in the Concentration Camps. God knew but never intervened although people were praying all the time. More fuel for atheists.

I don't, and wouldn't, have a fish on my car, but it was a gradual build up to the actual genocide, baby steps. Once it started, most people were not about to rock the boat and end up in the showers with them.
