I have 2 tattoos & I'd describe the process of getting them as "uncomfortable". It's not as bad as having a tooth pulled, but it's worse than a paper cut. But it's bearable. The one on my hip was the more painful of the two, mostly when the ink was being filled in (not doing the outlining), or when the needle hit bone. The one on my shoulder wasn't bad at all -- just a little sore for a few days, the same type of sore as when you get a sunburn.

If it gives you any indication, I'd like to get another one somewhere, but I can't decide where to put it.

The foot followed closely by the ankle for hurting the most because you don't have as much meat there. I can speak from experience on the ankle because I have one that goes all the way around and it hurt the worst when they got to the back. Also, I have one on the inside of my other ankle and that hurt just as much but I keep getting them done so I must enjoythe pain.

My third tattoo was on my hip, and I actually fell asleep on the table. The bonier or fattier the area the more it will hurt. Muscles hurt the least. Remember that your foot, calf, and ankle are all pretty visible, and it will be hard to hide a tattoo there if you end up getting a job that doesn't approve of body art. Good luck.

How much it hurts depends partly on your pain threshold, and partly on where you get it. In general, areas where the surface of the skin is closer to bone (like the shin, ankle, elbow, wrist, etc.) tend to hurt more. Fleshier areas tend to hurt less. So out of the areas that you listed, the foot and the ankle would probably hurt most, and the calf and thigh would probably hurt less (although I've heard the calf can be painful). I had one done on my shoulder, and it hurt, but it wasn't excruciating- it kind of felt like being scraped with a knife.

Ok so heres my OPINION.... it pretty much hurts everywhere, some places a little more or less than others, but it's totally bearable. However, before worrying about the pain I hope that you've spent as much time and effort worrying about whether or not this tattoo you've chosen will stand the test of time. It's very important that you're getting something that has strong ties to who you are and /or is a very moving piece of art to you, (when I say "moving" I mean, it touches your heart deeply in a way that will never change.) It can't be something that you say "Hey THAT'S really cool" about because our ideas of what's really cool changes, trust me...you should've seen my "really cool" hairstyle in High school. Good Luck!

I have one on my lower back. It was more annoying than painful, though a few spots kind of hurt, but it wasn't bad overall.

I have lots of friends with tats, and I'm told (by more than one) that the most painful places are the foot and wrist.

Calf ankle or thigh, I've heard is not so bad.

Best advice - Don't do it. The message it gives to others is: "I am trashy and I have poor judgment." Wear jewelry if you feel the need for adornment. You can remove that if you change your mind. Not so much with a tattoo. You will be stuck with this "art" for the rest of your life. That is a long time to be "branded." Think about it--how much will you like the tattoos when you are older, wrinkled, and flabby? Distorted images definitely not sexy.

depending on the amount of detail you want....will equal the amount of pain you get....... The finer the lines=the smaller the needle group=the more pain.....Thigh the inside hurts but not outside or top....foot isn't bad until you get to the outer side....calf doesn't hurt.....ankle not bad except around Achilles tendon.

Pain from tattooing varies. A fleshy part of the body would probably be more comfortable, except the breast area. I got one on my chest above my nipple , was'nt to bad. I watched my daughter get one on her breast and she about squeezed all the soda out of a full caped plastic bottle, lol. On yo ankle may feel allot of vibration threw the bone. Any bone area is rather uncomfortable. Not to mention nerve endings that suprise you now and then.
