I would. It is a nice courteous thing to do even if they don't say hi back. And if they still don't say hi....it's not your problem! They're just rude! :)

Well, here's the flipside opinion - Im the rude coworker who never says HI first.

I work in a smaller office and Im the only one who shows up on time, if not early, and I end up staying late because I have alot of work to do (usually cleaning up work that everyone else didnt finish). When people start sauntering into the office LATE... Im up to my eyeballs in work or on the phone or dealing with some sort of drama. Im pissed off because I am the only one who comes to work on time and alot of times I feel like people who come in late are trying to KMA to cover themselves.

Most of the time, I barely notice when people come in and sometimes I dont have the time or the desire for chit chat. Sometimes all I can manage is a nod. Im at my desk for a good 2 hours before I have a chance to feel caught up and have time to go say HI to people.

Yes, it happens, and no - you are not obligated to say hello. I actually had to take a class at one corporation I worked for that covered inter-office conduct. It is not required by anyone to submit to or engage other coworkers in passing.

Personally, I like to at least make eye contact with people as I pass and put on a small smile. That way a quick nod or unspoken greeting can be shared without putting anyone "on the spot."

The theory in that class I took was that we are all there to work, and with people of many different cultures and levels of stress. To believe that saying hello to someone in passing is so out of context from another person's culture was a little hard for me to accept, but apparently it warranted a class from that corporation.

Your being friendly and polite if people don't reply back then that's their problem don't let the majority put you off your doing a good thing, even if it's just a small amount of people that you get a Hi back from that's fine, maybe the group of people who do reply will say the same to someone else.

This has happened to me numerous times at work.I acknowledge that sometimes people don't hear or are in world of their own however some are just plain ignorant.let .You will find this is a common occurrence in many workplace establishments.Do not let it upset you.Stop being Mr nice guy all the time and let that certain colleague show you some respect for a change.

You know, keep your heart pure and say hi...you'd be taking the higher road. It helps to not have expectations. Disappointment comes only from expectations. So do what you feel is right, without asking for anything back. You will feel good about yourself. Else it will eat into you, and distract you from other important things in your life. Not worth it.

I too have a coworker thank god i don't have to be around her much, but she only seems to say hi to the small click of people she likes and ignores the rest of us like we are beneath her. At first it was annoying, but to be honest with you, I have adjusted to not even greeting her anymore. It's okay with me.
We don't have to like everyone we work with and visa versa, and it is impolite to not acknowledge someone, but we live on a very unethical planet, so it happens.
Personally, go out of your way to keep saying hi to the person and that shows your the polite and ethical one, and that is all that matters.

Yes, but I say hi anyway, just because I am that type of person. I enjoy being friendly. Someday that person may need a smile and a hello.

Yes...I work with moody women. We have a few who do that. I don't typically say hi to them and I never ask how they are. I did when I first started and I always got "I'm here" or "it's Monday". Real friendly!!

I think it is okay to say hi but not to ask how are they. Sometimes I say hi but that would be all depends on who I am talking to. Sometimes people think you are prying when you ask the too many questions.
