I am interested in getting a Panasonic sc ht740 home theater. However, the sales person told me that I would only get surround sound from DVD's and that my normal TV viewing would only be in stereo (front speakers only). Is this true or is there a way to hook the components up so that I will get surround sound from both? I have a HDTV and local cable service (HD programming). Are there any other remotely inexpensive starter home theater systems anyone would suggest?

He is right there is no digital input for audio on the unit.

But <$200 dollars for a surround system? You get what you pay for. I will include a few setups you should consider that I would consider a low-end starter system. But know that the best results come from a separates setup.

According to Panasonic's website, although this system does not have digital inputs it does have analog audio inputs. Although you will not get 5.1 from your normal TV viewing on this system you should be able to get Pro-Logic surround sound with this system. This would use all of your speakers.

As your salsemen said. Oh and the stereo inputs will only garner you a stero output. these units do not have synthizized quad, or any other such feature built into them. they are a least cost to get disk 5.1 sound into your home solution, another words, a purpose made appliance.
