Ultimately, above the human authors, the Bible was written by God. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that the Bible was "breathed out" by God. God superintended the human authors of the Bible so that while using their own writing styles and personalities, they still recorded exactly what God wanted to be said. The Bible was not dictated from God, but it was perfectly guided and entirely inspired by Him.

Humanly speaking, the Bible was written by approximately 40 men of diverse backgrounds over the course of 1500 years. Isaiah was a prophet, Ezra was a priest, Matthew was a tax-collector, John was a fisherman, Paul was a tentmaker, Moses was a shepherd. Despite being penned by different authors over 15 centuries, the Bible does not contradict itself and does not contain any errors. The authors all present different perspectives, but they all proclaim the same one true God, and the same one way of salvation—Jesus Christ (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). Few of the books of the Bible specifically name their author. Here are the books of the Bible along with the name of who is most assumed by Biblical scholars to be the author, along with the approximate date of authorship:

Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy = Moses - 1400 B.C.
Joshua = Joshua - 1350 B.C.
Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel = Samuel / Nathan / Gad - 1000 - 900 B.C.

Ezekiel = Ezekiel - 550 B.C.
Daniel = Daniel - 550 B.C.
Hosea = Hosea - 750 B.C.

Today's King James version of the Bible was written by priests about the year 400. They worked from previous Bibles that were written in languages that were not well understood. It is believed that they added a few verses that served their own agenda. For instance, during biblical days, there were no churches. People gathered in one another's house and worshiped. Yet the Bible says to financially support the Church. But there were no churches. Religion prefers if people don't study the History of Civilization.

which part... a lot of the old testament was written by Moses (kinda depends on who you ask too... as some parts don't make sense if you actually believe Moses kept writing after he wrote that he died)..... the New Testament was pretty much a collection of writings by Matthew and Paul or their disciples Mark and Luke. Of course the whole collection of writings known as the bible is just a collection of writing that was put together by a roman emporer named Constantine a few hundred years after Jesus died. He didn't really have any holy reason to set the bible out as it is, but cherry picked parts that would allow him to unite his people and give them a common relegion that would strengthen his power. Its part of the reason other writings by the followers were left out of the bible they didn't cement the power base Constantine wanted so he just left them out.

The Bible has several authors. God selected several people to write his message and to teach people through stories the importance about living a good life. Although many people actually wrote the text of the Bible, God is the true inspiration of the Bible and therefore the author as well.

It was written by many who were inspired by God. It was originally written in other languages. Our English version was commissioned by King James who requested scholars translate it.
