As for me, I have this really weird fear about space. The thought of there being no end and no begining to it terrifies me. Anything that goes on forever is a really scary thought. Does anyone else have a similar phobia?

Now is the only aspect of time eternally present and nothing to fear. You probably mean the idea of the infinite.

Although we are all interconnected and only misperceive that we are alone because we are in separate bodies, this is a common phobia. Consider that we are all - together - embedded in a shared multi-dimensional quantum field that is responsive to consciousness, individually and en masse. Perhaps that will help your angst.

You are allowing yourself to be afraid of a concept. Eternity, infinity, endless space, or endless time is simply a concept, an idea and nothing more. There is no way to verify if it is true, or if it actually exists. Think about it. If you were to prove infinity exists you would have to live forever, right? If you were to prove that space goes on forever you would have to continue to go out measuring it forever, you'd never get to the end, therefore you cannot prove it does this. Stop being terrified of a concept. Thats all it is.

Unless, you are planning a trip on the next space shuttle and plan to do a little space walking, there is no reason for you to have a fear of space. I know I can always use a lttle more, not matter how much I've got.

As for infinity, when we get there, I don't think it will feel any different than here. Fish aren't uncomfortable in the water, turtles aren't uncomfortable in mud, and we will just be in a different state of being.

Well, never fear, space isn't endless! It is finite, but without a definite boundary, which is scarier. You just go on and on, but eventually you'd end up back where you started because space curves at the edges. I think the idea of space curving like that, but apparently not having a boundary scares me more than the actual phenomenon because I can't really comprehend the idea.

I have to admit to obsessing over that question more than once. My fear has to do with my inability to understand the concept of infinity as it relates to time and space. If I could find a way to fully understand it, then it would not seem scary.

I am like you...the fear of the unknown in space! YIKES!
Black holes which one would implode in and such...no thank you!

Now, as for eternity, NO FEAR at all. I am a Christian and my faith has wiped away all fear in my eternal life! I am convinced and persuaded that eternity, with God, will be the most wonderful experience anyone can have!

Nothing really "goes on forever" as it appears. All things arise due to causes and conditions are changing and impermanent. Nothing scary about that unless you fear change as well. In which case it would be a good idea to think about the concept of "good" in change... i.e. things you perceive as bad don't stay that way forever.

As I so often do, I like Terry Pratchett's intelligent, amusing take on it.
He said, "People think that space is big. It isn't. Space is somewhere to be big IN".
Vinslave and the Coyote have hold of the same stick, but by different ends.
Don't worry, everything's cool.

The infinity of space doesn't scare me as much. But eternity time wise and that it isn't even relevant is scary.

My ex did. It freaked me out because she was a very intelligent person. I would have thought she'd have no problem at all with the concept. But the idea just scared her, exactly like you're saying. I guess my point here is that you're not the only one.
