They can work out, but they won't if there is no goal of getting to the same place. That is the goal right? to be together. With cell phones, emails and IMs you can go a long time with out actually seeing a person in person and be close. BUT sometimes that is not enough, you eventually will need a hug or a kiss or a shoulder to lean on - physically.
IF this is a long term, more than friendship relationship, plan on how to live closer together so you can have more face to face time. If that is not possible or in the plans, then just being friends maybe all you want to work at being.

They can and they can't. It all depends on the couple. If you both try to make it work, then most likely it will work, but if only one of you trys, then the relationships not going to do so well. Just get along, having to be far away and don't make it harder on your relationship then it already is.

Depends totally on the couple and if they want to make it work. Its hard because you don't know what they're doing behind your back and you can not see them on a regular basis, but I know for a fact that they can work out if the couple works at it.
