People don't dress properly for job interviews because they aren't being taught (or ignore) the rules for dressing properly. These days it is about dressing comfotably, so people run aound in sloppy t-shirts and shorts or jeans. What people tend to forget is you are still judged by your appearance, and the way you dress is about 50% of the way you look (hair, make-up, jewelry, nails, perfume/body odor are the other 50%).

I'm trying to tackle this question in two parts :

Why don't people know how to dress for job interviews TODAY?
- I don't think this is the important part; It's not just in the current day world that people do not appropriately dress up, it has been happening since time immemorial. Only it's more prevalent nowadays.

WHY don't people know how to how to dress for job interviews today?
- Maybe because of increasing laid back attitude to anything that is worthwhile. With the current obsession with anything that is glitzy, with shortening of attention span and cheap publicity - this is more prevalant.

Uhm- well, maybe they are part of the construction crew that is getting the place ready? The guy in the gym clothes might be inside setting up the new gym equipment, and the guy that looks like he just mowed the lawn might have been doing landscaping outside of the new place?

So true. So true.

Many people have applied the "everything goes" nature of our
society to their wardrobe. Of course, I'm all for being comfortable too...but,

it is appropriate to dress for the occasion. Many people do not recognize the importance of an interview (duh!) and dress in their normal day-to-day attire. And, frankly, people do not want anyone telling them what's "appropriate".

My husband sees this all of the time when he interviews people for law enforcement positions. Yes - Law Enforcement Positions.

Ultimately, those who dress for the job...get the job.

People have no work ethic, therefore, appearance means nothing to these people. I once had a girl come in dressed like Madonna, I couldn't help but laugh. People don't know what Dress for Success means.

We are so use to dressing comfortably at home, school , college that I think we don't know what it is to dress up any more. Remember those days when girls had to wear dresses to school (no pants allowed) and when you practically had to dress yourself in starch to go to church! How about all those rules we had as children about wearing ties, patent leather shoes, gloves, hats, ect... Kids today have no clue what us older folk went through just to go someplace!

Amazing isn't it? The laxness in dress codes and rules has turned most of the population into slobs. And how about all those multiple piecings and exposed tattoos?

That is pretty disgusting.....if it's just a job that you only need a high school diploma and no further education (retail store or fast food) I can understand this, but if you're looking for a serious job or career, you should at least shower, brush your teeth, comb your hair, and wear something clean and conservative.
