Ok here is a real honest answer from someone who loves to go shark fishing. First things first you have to have the right equipment. And why later on why not now. theres no time like the present. Anyway depending on where you live the bait is different but the tactic is the same. I live in south florida so the species i target is bull and lemon shark. Chumming is crucial. Lots of chum and fish oil to attract the shark. Around here what i typically do is catch a few bonito a real rich and bloody fish not good for eating. cut em open and hang them over the edge with a rope. not too deep or the shark is likely to hit that instead of your bait. The wait can be anywhere from 30min to a few hours depending on where you are. After the chum has been out for at least a half an hour you can begin to fish. I usually use large mullet or small jacks for bait, but any 8-14" fish will do just fine. you can go larger but you have to have the right gear. I usually cut a gash just before the tail in the fish just to give it more scent and to injure the fish. after that its just a waiting game. Now if your not going to eat the shark dont kill it. Use large circle hooks so they hook themselves in the side of the mouth. this increses there chance of survival. But thats the basic gist of it. lots of scent in the water and semi large baits. and the bait has to be fresh as you can get. any more questions email me. GOOD LUCK AND TIGHT LINES

Charter a boat.
Motor out to a reef, shallow bank, shoal or kelp bed.
Rig a line, 200 lb test with a two-foot metal leader, a Number one or two hook and some smelt or herring bait fish.
Chum the water with oily smelly fish grindings.
Dangle the line ten to 15 feet below the boat. Voila! Shark!

Off of Long Island, you'll need to travel about 12 miles from the coast, 20 to 25 miles is better. Then you create a chum slick, usually with bunker, mackerel, and bunker oil. Then you drift using freshly caught bluefish if you have a live well and hook up the live bluefish and use it as shark bait.

Adam is a one on the spot!
but I would like to add this also use menhaden oil and mix with a ground chum to make a good slick with!
for small shark use wire leader with haywire twist larger shark go with a cable leader from 3 foot to 10 feet and have a good set of cutters handy if needed!
always use circle hooks and file point well!
I also use a trolley rig to float bait out - use a party balloon(thick one)I use a rod with braid on it then tie to the rubber stem above rubber band on balloon then at bottom of rubber band on balloon I tie 2lb test line to eye of hook to float bait out then when bait is where needed I give a jerk small mono breaks off and reel in balloon! You can do the same with using a large snap swivel and bouy to float baits out!

I always have good luck with a large piece of cut bait. Be sure to use a steel leader so they dont keep your hook. Shark fishing is alot of fun and they are really good to eat, but use caution when you land the fish.......those teeth are dangerous and thier skin can cut you.

Depends where you live.
Here in the northeast coastal USA, there are many fishing charters that go shark fishing. Season is usually June-August.

go buy a seal suit, jump in the water, and flop around
your bound to catch one......just kidding
best bet....hire a charter boat....they have all the equipment and know where to fish......it takes alot of staminia to fight one... be prepared to take over an hour to land one if you hook one.....if your not in decent physical shape....afterwards your body will feel like jelly
