This is tough to answer not knowing the situation.
If you've done something previuosly and you now have to face people, try this: "I just gotta say..." you finish the statement, acknowledging being dim-witted that day, or not realizing how things appeared. Saying it in a light-hearted way, if possible, and with some humor will help.
If you are in the midst of an embarrassing situation, the best thing to do is say, "well, now that I've drawn all the attention to myself, would you all like to hear me sing or see me dance?" Laugh.
I screwed up a couple months ago. Embarrassed myself at a lunch out and stared at my plate until I felt the heat in my face disappear.
I'll be using my own advice next time.

Act like you did it on purpose or that it's the most natural thing in the world. Laugh about it, like it was a joke.
One time, when I was much younger, I was getting off the school bus while overloaded with schoolbooks (I had the entire contents of my locker in my backpack and in my arms) I lost my balance and fell off the bus. Landed on my knees, put a hole in my jeans and bloodied the sidewalk. Everyone started laughing and I could feel the tears starting behind my eyes.
I knew if I cried right there that I'd hear about it for the rest of the school year. I couldn't let that happen, so I threw my books down, stood up as fast as I could, bowed, blew kisses and said, "Thank you! Thank you! I'm pleased you all enjoyed my specially prepared skit, 'Nerdy Girl Falls Off School Bus!'" Oh, I got some teasing the next day, but by the day after that, no one remembered it.

I was once at a very swanky party at a doctor's new home. An hour into the party another attendee pointed out my apparel malfunction and did so in front of everyone.
I did not make any move to pull it up and said, "Oh, I know. I use it as a marketing tool." I sat back down and finished the party with my fly wide open.
Now THEY were ones embarrassed.

I acknowledge the situation. Recently, I was on a cruise with my bf. As we were sailing out of NYC, everyone was on the deck watching the beautiful view, I slipped on water near a pool and fell on the floor, and then realized there was a deck above me where everyone saw me. I didnt bother looking at them (my bf told me everyone saw) I just laughed, took his hand to get up and held my stubbed toe for a while, laughing with him about how it hurts.
No big deal. And when I did face the crowd, I didnt act surprised and turn red, I was nonchalant.

Accept it as an embarassing situation. We can't go back and change the past, so instead accept that this thing happened and handle it with grace and good humor.
Saying things like, "Sheesh, that was pretty embarassing. I'll be sure not to ________________ in the future!" helps. If you acknowledge the situation, the embarassment will fade fast.

Embarrass someone else worse than your situation.
Ask a person about their "same sex" partner relationship and how's it going. Or ask if they've gotten rid of their chronic diarrhea episode.

If I'm around friends I start to laugh. Usually, they join right in.
If I'm in a formal setting I just say "excuse me" or "I am so sorry" and then just ignore it.
