Depends on budget - if you want a system that does it all, but is pricey - look at final cut pro. The new version came out (around 1200 bucks) but will do everything.

Someting cheap - go to Avid.com and download their free version - it's bare bones and works on PC (I think) and they also have other programs available for purchase.

These are all professional editing software products. Personally, I just bought Final Cut Studio Pro - lots of stuff on it, and I'm still playing around with it.

An easy video editing program is IMovie (pronouned eye-movie). If you want professional programs - Avid and Final Cut Pro are good. There's also Adobe Premiere. Editors I know say Final Cut Pro is less difficult to use than Avid, but Avid is the Mercedes of editing programs.

Pinnacle Studio 10 is a great one. You have to buy it, but if it is only for one project you can d/l a 30 day free trial.

Another great program is Adobe Premier Pro. Older versions will probably be cheap, but the newest, CS3, is decently priced. Adobe products are the cream of the crop. They are what professionals use. So, if you want to develop your skills then Adobe is the path for you.

Adobe also has 30 day free trials.

You may try the best software I have seen AVS Video Tools. It can convert to/from all key format, upload video or DVD directly to key portables like iPod, Sony PSP, Archos, Zen Creative, and mobiles.

It can capture video from DV or webcams, TV tuners, DVB-T, DVB-S, transfer VHS tapes to DVD, remove commercials, edit video, copy and burn DVDs and video files: AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), MP4, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD, VOB, VRO, MPEG 1,2,4, MPG, DAT, VCD, SVCD, ASF, H.263, H.264, RM, DVR-MS.
