Well, advice from psychology and medicine is not to start training until about age 2 -- although some children may be ready slightly earlier and will let you know with their behavior. There has been some research comparing parents who start at 18 months or earlier and parents who start at 2 years -- basically, the child learns at about the same time either way! So the idea is don't pressure them before they're physically ready, which is typically around age 2. It is often easier for little girls. The time it takes to be totally out of diapers can be 1 or 2 years after that (especially at night)

There is a huge range when it comes to potty training. Some children learn as early as 15 months and refuse to wear (or need) diapers. Others are not potty trained until 2.5 or 3 years. Most continue to wear at least a pull-up (toddler diaper) until age 4 just in case there are accidents.

My son stopped when he turned one and then he went to pull ups, by 2 1/2 or so he was completely potty trained. I don't understand why any parent would want their kids to be in pullups or diapers any longer than that. It seems to be an appropriate age to me.

Usually by 3 year old. But as puberty in boys start this often leads to bedwetting problems and can mean back to diapers for 2 or 3 years.
15% of boys are bedwetters at 12, 10% at 15.

This all depends on when you and they decided they are ready to be toilet trained. You can change to pull ups while they are in the process of toilet training, but those too are a form of diapers. When the child is fully toilet trained, night and day, then you are diaper free. That's my answer and it's the best I have.
