Hi,
I have two Standard Poodles. It really depends on how much you want to maintain them yourself. The longer the hair, they more they will mat if you don't comb them.
I have a website all about Standard Poodles and there is a page about the different Poodle Cuts. Check it out, it might help.

A lot if it depends on the dog's lifestyle and how much work you're willing to do. If you bought your poodle for looks, you might want to get it the standard poodle cut. If you are more concerned with the wonderful personality many poodles have, and you don't need a showy dog, just get a puppy cut, it'll be shorter and easier to maintain!

Depends on whether you're showing it or not.
You need a show clip if you're showing it
Otherwise a standard "kennel clip" with the hair about 1" long all over except the paws and base of the tail - they should be cropped close.
the kennel clip is easy to maintain and easy to "grow out" to one of the AKC accepted show clips for later.
To those who don't know why the "frou-frou" show clip was developed - remember poodles come from the cold, marshy parts of France. They were bred as water retrievers - and are very good at that. The idea of the big billowy lion coat was to provide insulation for his chest cavity, hip bones, head, tail and ears; while at the same time giving him less water resistance (the English Channel is quite rough) so he can swim faster and longer. This was definitely NOT considered a frou-frou clip out in the salt marshes of Western France. It gets cold there.

Depends on the dog's lifestyle, coat quality, how often he goes to the groomer and how much brushing you're prepared to do. Also depends on the dog's build and structure, some poodles may look fine in a cut, but another poodle might look really awful in the same cut.

I have a poodle and we always ask for a puppy cut, but with a pom pom tail. It means they cut them even all over, but leave a little ball of fur on the end of their tail. We just didn't like how the original haircut made them look, this makes them look less fru-fru.

the easiest cut to give him would be a puppy clip, but you can give him the english saddle or continental clip if you feel like being fancy! ;)
For the heat, you would want one of the 'fancy' clips since both have parts of the body completely shaved down, but see how he does in a puppy clip first.
