Our son is 18. In May he attended a beer party . He was nervous & ended up having one beer & leaving early. Leaving the party he was pulled over by officer who knew there was a party. His alcohol level was .001. He was arrested for Wisconsin Absolute Sobriety law. Later we contacted our insurance company to get him proof of insurance so he could get an occupational license since he was starting a new job. They granted the proof of insurance though claiming we had never added our son to our policy. I distinctly remember giving them all of our sons information. Now they want to double our insurance costs just to add our son to the policy. We cannot afford to do that. He will be going to college soon and needs a car there. What do we do?? He will get his license back on Sept 7, though his occupational license is good until then. But if we don't submit to their extortion they are dropping the vehicle he drives from policy. He has no prior accidents or tickets.

Hi there:

Your son will have to either be added or excluded from your policy as long as he is a member of your household. If you don't add him to the policy - he would not meet the definition of a 'covered driver' and there would be no coverage for him anyway. If he is going to college and your home is still his primary residence - he could still be on your policy. (I think it's either until he graduates...or is 21....check with your agent)

This may be the time to shop around for alternative coverage.

No matter where you go? Rates for males under the age of 25 are outrageous. Really. Unfortunately that is the sad truth and there is no way around it. Additionally....he is going to be considered high risk.

He could try to get coverage on his own - but no or little credit history could have a negative impact on his rates.

Long story short - it would technically be better for him to be added to your policy. He would later on be able to spin off of your policy onto his own policy.

Best of luck to you guys!

You should have paperwork from the insurance company with everything and everyone who is on the policy. Check your old records to see if he was ever on it. My company automatically sends a new policy when any changes are made.
