You don't have to go into great detail. Often people in such positions don't hear many honest thank you. So maybe just keep it short ...
Thank you so much for everything you did. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like you.

I wrote my doctor a thank you note after I had my baby- gave it to him at my six week check up. I just thanked him for being so understanding and listening to what I had to say, and considering how I was feeling, as well as the baby. (I found that most only considered her- didn't care about my safety and well-being at all.) I just bought a card and wrote a quick note, and since he is a resident, I put a stamped envelope with my address on it so that he can let me know when he has his own practice. I also included a picture of the new baby. Hope this helps.

Think of the qualities that make him the "compassionate Dr." that you are describing. Also think of the situation that prompted this sentiment as a means of reference for both of you.
Start out with bullet points on a first draft and expand from there. If you can, keep it to 2 paragraphs. Yes, doctors don't have time, but they also don't get a genuine "thank you" from many people that a note would convey. It means that you have gone the extra distance to recognize important qualities.

Just speak from your heart....make it short and sweet is the key. I'm an assistant for a Physician in Chief and he gets a lot of thank you cards. Believe me...short n' sweet is the best.

are you sure you aren't just trying to pick up on an eligible doctor? What could possibly be so difficult about writing a thank you note? Maybe you shouldn't even write him a note, and keep your relationship strictly professional.

Short and sweet, thank you for your services and being my health provider, but not in those exact words. An actual thank you card usually says it all and just say what you feel.

I work for a doctor, and I know he appreciates every thank-you he gets, whether it's just a card with a signature or a short note. Don't stress about it - just say 'thanks for what you did'.
