Fruit is more easily digested, and quickly digested if it is not mixed with the rest of your meal. An apple can be digested by itself in 20 minutes. If you eat an apple with a ham sandwich, it will take several hours. So, yes there is truth to the statement..

"it's not just what you eat, it's when you eat it"

There is a book called "fit for life" that delves into the science of eating certain foods together, and avoiding eating others at the same time.

A bullet point at the end of the following web page agrees with your above statement

In a book called 'Gut Solutions' they (a Nutritionist and a doctor) say "Eat fruit alone, or leave it alone" Their reasoning being that fruit is a 'simple carbohydrate' and should be only eaten w/ other simple carbs if anything at all because the digestive juices are different for proteins and complex carbs and so a mixture of foods might not get the 'Chemistry' right and take longer for everything to digest, leaving the fruits to ferment while waiting. I personally think if you had some fruit an hour or so after a meal, things would have progressed far enough along in your digestion process that it would not be a problem. And right now, Summer fruits are the best!

Not necessarily. Combining fruit with cheese is good on an empty stomach though.

Fruit can dramatically raise your blood sugar. The sudden drop then turns on your appetite both making you hungry and dropping your energy level. Combined with cheese, the rise is much slower and less steep, thus you get a more controlled amount of sugar.

I don't normally have a dessert after a meal, but rather several hours later or just in the middle of the day.

Yes it is. The theory is that because fruit has a quick digestion time, as opposed to other foods, such as meats and starchy vegetables, it is "slowed down" by other fods that take longer to digest
In fact, most fruits go straight through the stomach into the duodenum for digestion, which means if you put fresh fruit on top of a big meal, it has to wait until the other food is digested, during this time bacteria attack the fruit and ferment it, gobbling up all the nutrients and leaving you with a gassy stomach. The best rule to follow with fruits is; 'Eat them alone or leave them alone'

No. I don't get the logic as to why fruit has to be eaten on an empty stomach. You'll absorb the nutrients from it regardless of how much or little you have in your stomach.

With citrus fruits like oranges, you may actually want to have something on your stomach before eating it. The high acid content can cause issues (indigestion, heart burn, etc.) with some people.

I heard this in a holistic health class in college. The teacher said that it's because fruits and vegetables break down faster than meats in your stomach. I know this sounds sick, but he said that this will prevent the vegetables from rotting inside you while waiting for the meat to digest (if you ate the meat first).

Makes sense I guess.

nah.

though fruits are better to be eaten before meals, you can also have them about 2 hours after your meals. but not directly after a meal as it will take a LONG time to digest.

That sounds either like an excessively weird piece of advice or someone kidding you. There is no scientific basis behind that suggestion. Fruit has been eaten as a dessert for thousands of years.
