a lot of insects will cause that severe swelling of the bite area, not necessarily due to an allergic reaction
aside from the usual louse, bed bugs, mosquitoes, deer flies, sand flies and fleas, a particularly pesky insect that can be found in your house are members of the genus Triatoma. they live especially in old wood and stone structures

see the above website for pictures of these bugs.
their saliva elicits a nasty soft tissue reaction, leading to severe and sometime prolonged swelling with occasional allergic/anaphylactic reactions
i agree with a general insecticide regimen for your house. also boil all your possible affected linen for at least 15 minutes. you may also need to expose your bed to hot steam. make sure you also treat your bed frame which may harbor the insects. keep your pets outside the house. "off lotion" usually works for mosquitoes only.
if you are actually bitten, you may need to take antihistamines for the itchiness and apply cold compress for the swelling. DO NOT apply steroid ointments on the wound. I already saw about 10 patients who did just that and the bite degenerated into a large abscess (insect bites are also contaminated with bacteria). if swelling and redness persist, consult your doctor, you may already have a cutaneous infection from the bite
i hope this helps you

Citronella bands, you can get them at most camping/disposals stores. Mozzies and midgees hate the scent it gives off and they stay away. Another good one is Aeroguard, since you have a little one I would recommend you get the roll on instead of the spray. You can get non scented as well. Burn citronella candles outside your home, put up a bug zapper, UV light. This will kill off pretty much all that have been biting you. i hope this helps

When I was in India I could,nt understand why I was bitten so badly during the night. That was until I lit a candle and saw hoards of bed bugs fleeing from the light.I put saucers of water under the bed legs and poured boiling water into all the cracks of the cot. That did it .

I think you have an allergic reaction to the bu that bit you. Once a deer fly bit me and my whole foot swelled up. I took medicine for about 5 days to make it as good as new. My dad is really scientific and he knows a lot. He thought I had an allergic reaction to deer fly's. Maybe you have one too. I hope you get better, bye!

well make sure you home isn't infested with fleas. Then, use fabric softener sheets, rub them all over yourself and keep a few in your clothing, I know it sounds weird, but it does work. When you get a bite, rub it with a slice of raw onion, again, sounds strange, but it really works.

you might need to bomb your house with insecticide and then wash all clothing and blankets. Make sure any pets are on frontline, and buy some calamine lotion
