If you can take the time to get a calling card, you'll save yourself a few bucks no doubt. Just dialing from home you will likely get sacked with huge charges that are far above regular costs. Grab a calling card.

IAC (international access code) in the USA is 011 so dial this to make international calls.

Then 61 is the country code for Australia. Then you probably have 9 digits after that. A 61-4 code is going to be to a cell (mobile) phone in Oz so if you get a calling card or have a plan that seperates the prices, you might get charged more.

An MCI card from Costco a couple years ago was around .12/minute. I'm sure you can find something around .05 to .12 without too much trouble.

FYI, when he wrote the number to you, if he put a "0" first, that number is probably not needed. So if he wrote (0) 2 9979 4455 or something, then you need to dial:

011-61-2 9979 4455.

The 0 is like dialing the "1" in the States/Canada to make long distance calls (because our country code is "1" in North America)

Good luck! Remember, they're +14 to +16 hours ahead usually! :)

I presume you are stating you have the Austrailian's local phone number but need to know how to dial to Austrailia. (It would be helpful if you were to write clearer so help can be provided easier.)

Go to your local phone book. In the front of it are directions for International Calling. It will tell you the way to place a call to most nations, and Austrailia is among them. Follow their direction.
