& why do they taste so different when they should be the same?

I don't know why the taste so different...but i guess that is why the potato is so versitile because you can literally make it a million ways and it doesn't taste the same. I like french fries better, but I like crinkle cut fries that are crispy on the outside, just a little mealy on the inside, hot, with salt and ketchup. But I like tater tots too....hmmm well I like most potatoes well exept for potato salad...but that's a whole nuther question. :)

They are 'the same' and 'different' at the same time. French fries are 'cut whole potatoes' that 'absorb' some of the oil they are fried in ... if there is a 'smell' in the oil, the fries will pick it up so they'll taste different ... EVERY TIME you make them.
"Tater tots" are made from 'shredded' potatoes that are then 'pressed into the shape ... and those are 'fried' before they are sold, so the 'oil' is 'cleaner' of contaminants (even a 'good food' is a contaminant as far as taste and odor are concerned) ... but the 'real difference' between the two is in their 'preparation ... shredding exposes more of the 'natural sugars and carbohydrates' so the tater tots are 'sweeter' than french fries, which are 'cut' but not as 'finely' as the potato in the 'tot.'

I prefer Ore Ida French fries to Tater Tots though I love both. French fries are just sliced then prepared. Tater tots are mushed down and extruded. That is why they have entirely different textures.

French fries are better. NO FREEDOM FRIES! Lameness.

They seem different because of the different preparation. Fries are simply deep-fried potatoes with lots of salt. Tater tots are minced potatoes with breading, which are then deep-fried and salted.
They have distinctly different textures, but really the taste is the same.
