I saw "Sicko" earlier this week. What is the biggest drawback to America adopting a socialized medicine program?

(And I hope it is not "the first step to communism")

What people in the US don't understand is that we already have some form of socialized medicine. The taxes that I pay go to paying for health insurance of old people, pregnant teenagers and their babies, and many other people that I don't know and probably are just too lazy to get a job.

However, when my mom hit a serious snag in her health and couldn't work and I couldn't afford to pay her medical bills, where could I turn? Nowhere, no one would help me. It made me sick that I couldn't get her help even for a short period of time to get her back on her feet.

I am an American and I love free market, but free market doesn't work when it comes to people's health. There should be a basic health care available to everyone. If you want your operation with the absolute best doctor with the newest cutting edge equipment, then pay for it, but there is plenty of great (not necessarily new or incredibly expensive) technology that can save and improve many lives.

There are numerous drawbacks. You cannot limit it to just one.
1. If you want to have a procedure done, you will have to wait a long time, because everything will be crowded. Everybody will be going to see their doctor for everything.
2. If you are a geriatric patient and need a procedure done, the goverment will dictate if you can have it done. You are not going to live that long anyway, so why should we pay to have it done.
3. The good physicians will only see people who can pay. The ones who have National Health Insurance, will go to the ones who are not that good.
4. There will be no new technology (i.e. MRI's, and CT), invinted because the goverment will dictate how much the manufactuer will get paid.
5. You think there is red tape now, with socialized medicine, the red tape for your doctor to get paid will take forever, and you may not be able to be seen in the interim.
6. The doctors, have already said that they will only work 8-5, and no weekends. Good luck seeing a doc after that.
7. The wait to see a doctor will be months, ifnot years, because everybody will be going to see the doctor for everything minor.
8. The doctors will get paid a set fee for everything they do, no matter what is wrong with you. If you develop another disease, they may or may not get paid for that.
These are just a few arguments against socialized medicine.

Well first of all it is hard enough to work as a doc in current socialized medical systems which is why canada and england are in a huge doctor drought right now. Another problem is that it is impossible to get care when it is needed due to huge "waiting lines" for treatment ie surgeries. The last problem is that we students allready incure 500,000 dollars in debt in school as it is and if you really want to cure the system make the education more affordable and make the insurance coding system easier. The doctors that accept our current "socialized" medicare/medicaid patients loose money for each one that crosses through the doors
if you ever want to know about the theory of socialization read "Atlas Shrugged" a life changing book that will really open your eyes to the true nature of dictation of morality.
