I always say learning is the best gift to give. Soft books and books the child cannot tear and eat. Reading is soooooooo important at this age. Also wood puzzles with letters or numbers are great. All these are cheap and some great ways to interact with your child.

Save the big ticket items for everyone else as long as they don't mind because kids are picky sometimes. It seems that the more big and expensive the gift the least they will actually use it. Go for something else like a fisher price playset that is age appropriate or something as simple as a bouncy ball. Kids this age just love simple things with lots of colors and maybe some music. Be sure to get toys that are interactive so that he can learn motor skills while he has fun playing. Good luck and have fun!

Don't worry about getting him a "big" item... at that age they don't understand what's going on, and they don't remember it later on. Most kids at that age end up being more interested in the boxes and bows and paper than the acutal gifts anyway. I agree that a bubble blower is a good idea, kids of all ages love that. Just make sure to keep it high enough that he can't touch it and get the bubble solution in his mouth or eyes.

You can get him something smaller. That's just fine. He'll be so overwhelmed with all the big things he'll never notice and doesn't fully understand yet what came from whom.
A good suggestion (for us anyway) was the LittleTouch LeapPad. It's about $40-45 (including tax) the cartridges are about $14 (including tax). It is a fun activity and our little one has loved, loved, loved it for 3 years now...(We bought it just before turning one. Get the one for ages upto 3 years.
It really is a fun toy and provides lots of learning and keeps them busy!!

Get him whatever you want. He's probably not going to remember his first birthday anyways. (When he's older) He'll have plenty of things to play with and I'm sure some that he won't even play with at all.

Save your money, what does he care. I don't waste money when they're young, my toddler wants to play with the contents of my kitchen cupboards more than her toys. Save your money for when they're older.
