Standardization.

It give everyone in the industry a benchmark to go off of. Since there are so many technical things in the world today, calibration is critical for part interchangeability and the smooth operation of technical devices in general. "One pound" to a Frenchman would not be the same as "One pound" to an American. The reason is that gravity is not the same all over the world, hence the need to calibrate measuring devices.

If your equipment is not calibrated u could chase your tail troubleshooting a power supply as u think it is 6 v. and not 12 v. when that problem doesn't exist it is the meter not reading correctly.
