You can, but DON'T!

I highly recommend that you do not pack it! Here's why:

1.) Depending on the airport you fly out of, your bag stands a good chance of getting manually screened. Some TSA, not all, agents have been fired for stealing out of people's stuff.

2.) If your bag makes it to the aircraft with your Xbox still in it, it will be in the cargo bin with at least 100 other bags. Bags are not packed nice and neat on airplanes. You could have up to 30 other bags on top of it and it could get crushed.

3.) Airline baggage handlers don't treat all bags with gentle care. They touch over 5,000 bags per day usually. That means they usually throw them into the carts or the bin becaue they have a certain amount of time to load all of them up!

4.) Finally, if your bag is damaged, NO airline will cover the broken Xbox. Airlines have this thing called a contract of carriage. That means that they set the stage for what they are responsible for in your checked luggage. All of them clearly state that electronics and computer equipment will not be covered in a customer's checked bag. Even if your bag is pilfered and your box is stolen, or it is just broken. When you purchase a ticket, it's printed on the back in fine print that you accepted the rules and regulations of the COC. They will just say "i'm sorry" and leave you with a broken box.

5.) I do agree with the answer above me about the homeowner's insurance. However, I wouldn't go the the hassle of getting that replaced through the insurance over on hardware item. It's just easier to carry the thing on.

6.) Your last and final alternative is to FedEx it. FedEx will help you pack it up really nice and cushy. They will give you the tracking number and you can purchase additional insurance on it. ($1 for every 100). Never trust an airline to get your stuff to you in one piece!

I work for a major airline and I used to work in the lost baggage area. This is why I highly recommend not packing it. It's perfectly fine for you to take it in your carry-on. This way you can guard it.

Yes, you can..

Before travel you should contact your residential insurer .

Airlines liability may not cover the full cost of your X-box if it is damaged or lost, or it may not be covered at all.

If you have a home or tenant policy it may have a provision for insuring items that are normally in your home, but are lost in transit to another location.

Even if the policy does not have this provision, it may be possible to get a "rider" that will cover it and anything else that is unusual for baggage.

Contact your insurance agent and ask about YOUR policy.
