You can, but do so at your own risk. The way the packing guys throw the suitcases around, I wouldn't want to put anything expensive/breakable in there. If the luggage is stolen, lost, etc, they aren't responsible for what was in your luggage. I'd leave it at home.

That's the kind of valuable item you should take only if you can carry it on with you. Don't put things like that in checked baggage. There are too many problems with various forms of damage and loss.
