as long as its puppy chow, you're probably okay. puppies need the extra vitamins and nutrients from puppy food, so there probably isn't much of a difference between small breed and large breed dog food. if you notice your pup gaining weight or having diahrrea or constipation, go back and try to find another brand.

Um the pieces might be too big and it could choke. I would say it's better to give small breed dog and feed twice the amount recommended on the label then large breed puppy. Large breed puppy is designed for calmer puppies too- chihuahuas have a lot more energy then Golden's.

Call your vet and ask.

Or shop online if you can't find any in your town.

No problem with the food, large breed dog food is normally formulated so large breed dogs don't grow too fast which can be a contributing factor to hip dysplasia.

I haven't given my puppy any puppy specific food, I am feeding him a all life stages food so the puppy and my adult dog eat the same thing.

A company called Canidae I have heard great things about and not too expensive has this type of food

For my dogs I use a brand called Timberwolf - they offer free shipping but the food is more expensive than Canidae.

I don't think that it would hurt you puppy, i think that the pieces of food are just bigger but I'm no vet. You should really ask your vet which food to use but I would suggest Science Diet Small Breed Puppy food. It is one of the most reconized foods on the market and although it is not the cheapest, if you buy it in large quantities it saves you a TON of money.
Hope i could help you!

Large formula is for large dogs. I know, duh, you knew that. But it's because large dogs grow differently so they need more stuff. Giving this to a small breed puppy is not good for the puppy. There should be just a regular puppy food that will work.

Animal nutrition has come a long way since there were two kinds of dog food - wet and dry.

I would speak with your vet about this. And redouble your efforts to find a small/toy breed puppy food.

It isn't preferred, because the dog can swallow it whole and choke. Also small breed dogs and large breed dogs have different nuitrients that they need for growth. Will it kill him- no, unless he chokes. BUt it isn't advised.

In most cases its not bad. I have a small Jack Russel that we feed whatever the cheepest food is. He'll eat anything. As long as your dog eats it and it doesn't cause him problems I wouldn't worry about it.

you should look harder there are tons of small breed puppy food -- look at places specifically for pets ie not walmart or grocery stores-- your dog needs food specifically made for it
