There are several reasons.

The medical, alcohol, oil and textile industries fear that legalization will cut into their enormous profits, due to the many uses of the marijuana and hemp plants. (Oil, fibers, biomass.) Not to mention in the 5000+ years humans have been smoking/ingesting marijuana, NOT ONE PERSON HAS DIED FROM AN 'OVERDOSE'. Too bad the alcohol and pharmaceutical people can't say that about what they manufacture.

Medical people will tell you that it's bad for you, but off the record they advocate it's use (I've seen that happen with three of my friends), the government doesn't know how to 'regulate' it and tax it, so they figure they'll keep sending millions of people to jail for utilizing a plant.

It used to be legal until the 1930's when the government caved in to the special interests. That's too bad, the plant is fast growing and contributes tons of oxygen.

It's legal in California, and people smoke it non-stop there. It's really contributed to the problem of illegal drug use.

It has been proven that using marijuana leads to heavier drug use. Because it's legal in CA, there are tons of public places people can buy it. And all it takes is an Rx, which can be easily forged by a willing seller, dishonest/fake doctor, or people who steal prescription pads from doctors' offices when the Dr. isn't in the room.

I lived in CA for a year and never saw so much weed in my life! It was really sad, actually. People were high everywhere, even at work. They smoked out back.

Because it has not been proved to do anything better than existing drugs and no one wants to do a new scientific study for the FDA because it will prove it, once and for all, which will doom the movement.

Like the global warming guys who refuse to look at a farmers almanac which shows it was the same temperature in 1800's. If the FDA concludes officially there is no benefit, poof all the legalization hoopla goes flat.

pharmaceuticals can't profit off of it. Too much work to grow and cultivate and not enough money coming in. Not to menition the war on drugs is really expensive, and a great way to make money if you supply kevlar, ammo, apache's, guns. There's not enough money being made by the snack industry to make it appealing as an alternative

It is, by definition. It's legal under the state laws.

But it's also illegal under federal laws, because the federal govt (Congress) has not recognized that exception and changed the federal laws to allow it.

Let's face it. The majority of people who press to legalize it for medicine have never even used it for such a purpose. All the rallies for it are populated by neo-hippie type idiots who just want it to be easier to get the stuff for their own uses.
