The book of Mormon is not divinely inspired. This video on YouTube shows a Georgia preacher debating a Mormon. It's quite clear what the answer is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YPyvJacwUI
To daisykristina:
Daisy: "It's supposed to testify of Jesus Christ as our savior and redeemer, and that's just what it does."
Georgia preacher: "But don't the Bible testify Jesus Christ"
Mormon: "yes..."
Georgia preacher: "Then why do I need the Book of Mormon?"
Daisy, you say: "I trust God's answers..." but then why do you need the Book of Mormon? That's like telling the author of a book that you loved it and it's true; you just need another book to strengthen true words. You're telling God that the Bible, his words, is not enough. You don't need another book. You don't need an organization. All you need to do is trust in the Bible, and trust in Ephesians 2:8-9 ("For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.") Works won't get you into Heaven. Grace by faith in Jesus Christ alone.

What about the Book of Mormon? Truth or fiction, that is the question?
As they say, “The proof is in the pudding”, or in this case in the reading.
The Book of Mormon is many things. It is the most powerful and important book you will ever read. It is the only book that comes with a promise from God that He will tell you it is true. How about that? Truth or fiction, just read and ask? At least 13,000,000 people around the world have?
A few interesting things about it.
Its detractors have tried for over 100 years to discredit it. All have failed and very few of them care to read it.
Joseph Smith didn’t write it. Prophets (like in the Old and New Testaments) wrote it over a period of 1000 years, abridged it, and an angel from God delivered it to Joseph Smith who translated it.
Joseph Smith had less than a sixth grade education, translated a 500 page book in 90 days and changed nothing from the original translation. Joseph Smith was not capable of writing such a complex history of three different civilizations.
This book answers questions no other book including the Bible can answer.
If this book is true, then Joseph Smith was a prophet and he did what he said he did. Namely stood face with Jesus Christ and God the Father and spoke with them. If the book is not true, then Joseph Smith and the book are brilliant fiction, much better than Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter.
The real question is not “fact or fiction”, but, do you have the courage to prove it for yourself and then follow it?
Read the promise.
“And when ye shall receive these things (The Book of Mormon), I would exhort ye that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”
Truth or fiction, find out for yourself. Don't believe me or anybody else. Go to the source.
P.S. I know without a doubt that it is true and that, Joseph Smith was a prophet and that Jesus Christ, and God the Father are two, separate, living persons.

Really, that's from Lost Boys?...I guess it's been a while since I've caught up on my 80's vampire flicks. The thing I remember most about it is Keifer Southerland looking a lot like a Billy Idol vampire - okay I'm done with my flashback.
I don't think the Book of Mormon was ever supposed to be either of those things - its primary purpose is to be "another witness of Jesus Christ." It's supposed to testify of Jesus Christ as our savior and redeemer, and that's just what it does.
I know it contains the word of God because as John describes it - Jesus Christ is "the word." I know that from reading it, and asking God with real intent how I should take it - and I don't mean to insult anyone here, but I trust God's answers much more than anyone's answers here on YA.

If you think it is religious fiction you having read it with an open heart and a desire to know. It takes faith. I KNOW THAT IT IS TRUE!
BTW, "Vikcikix" read in Deuteronomy in the OLD Testate. It says the same thing as in Revelations about not adding or taking away scripture. In addition there were other books in the New Testate (e.g., Gospel of John) that were written AFTER the Book of Revelations. They just put Revelations last. It was NOT the last book written. This is an old argument to discredit the Book of Mormon and it is false!

I must disagree with the belief and notion the "The Lost Boys" is a notable Vampirpic. I must insist that your view and review the sensational film "Exit 23" which costars our secretary where I work. Her only line, "Oh damn. Now I'm undead!" (which was actually dubbed in later because her lips never moved), is a profound, moving and deeply meaningful pronouncement on the condition of humankind, and contains more truth, depth, wisdom and spirituality than the book you were referring to.
Really. I swear to god this is true.

It does disagree with the Bible on some things.
The Bible says that we are saved by grace with faith alone. We can't add anything to what Jesus did on the cross.
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by such grace you have been saved through faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of God (9) and not the result of works, lest anyone boast.
The Book of Mormon says that a Mormon has to work to earn their salvation. They have to do "all they can do" every day, all the time, or they don't make it.
For we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do (2 Nephi 25:23)
Alma 7:10 says that Jesus was born in Jerusalem.
Luke 2 says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
Alma 11 says that the resurrected body will be a body of flesh.
1 Corinthians 15 says that the resurrected body will be a spirit body.
It disagrees with other Mormon books as well.
For example:
Is God a spirit?
And then Ammon said: Believest thou that there is a Great Spirit? And he said, Yea. And Ammon said: This is God. And Ammon said unto him again: Believest thou that this Great Spirit, who is God, created all things which are in heaven and in earth? (Alma 18:26-28)
Or does God have flesh and bones?
The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also;…
(Doctrine and Covenants 130:22)
Does God remain the same?
For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity (Moroni 8:18)
Or does God change and progress?
God progresses because of knowledge. It is not because the Lord is ignorant of law and truth that he is able to progress, but because of his knowledge and wisdom… By the creation of the worlds and peopleing them, by building and extending , he progresses, but not because the fullness of truth is not understood by him. (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 1, P. 10 – cf. Articles of Faith, p. 430)
…for I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see. (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345)
Was Jesus conceived by the Holy Ghost?
And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem…she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God. (Alma 7:10)
Or was Jesus NOT conceived by the Holy Ghost?
The Doctrines of Salvation, Sermons and Writings of Joseph Fielding Smith, compiled by Bruce R. McConkie Volume 1, p 18 says otherwise:
The firstborn. Our Father in heaven is the Father of Jesus Christ, both in the spirit and in the flesh. Our Savior is the Firstborn in the spirit, the Only Begotten in the flesh. Christ not begotten of the Holy Ghost…He did not teach them that he was the Son of the Holy Ghost, but the Son of the Father

I'd go with fiction. Especially since a book at the same time was in the process of being published about a group of Jews who took a boat to the New World. THAT book was intended as fiction. Seems kind of strange that the Book of Mormon, which came out shortly later, had a similar plot. It's not even original.
