my 2yr old (26months) shes using sippy since she was 1 years old we live in governement housing and the cost to replace the carpet is 3k. and i dont have that kinda money to keep replacing it so sippy was best option. shes Slowly learning to drink from a normal cup i went to the store and got those disposable Dixie cups they come in sizes 3oz-6oz even some places have the 8oz cups. i got her the ones with puppy dogs on them and got the smallest (3oz) i only put clear liquids in it. like water ,flavored water etc...

she was 1st skeptical to use it till she saw the puppy she wet herself 3 times before getting a drink out of it... but after 2wks she can drink the whole 3 ozs without spilling. So shes about to graduate to the 6oz cups :)

ive tried plastic cups and such but she seems overwhelmed by them. so we graduately moved up in size and it seems to be working.

hope your have a successful training with your toddler and every child learns in their own time. At least your toddler isnt still on a bottle.:) dont let ppl tell you it gets harder as they get older it Depends on you and your toddler and the effort you put into training and how fun and creative you make it:)

good luck and best wishes:)

My son is 2 1/2 years old. He still uses a sippy cup most of the time. I think that every child is different and they will learn in their own time. We have started giving him regular cups just for little sips, like before bed. They also have new cups out that are sort of like sippy cups, but instead of the little "sippy spout" they have a straw....and the lids are airtight so even if they turn them up the liquid inside won't spill out. And seriously? It will be harder for them as they get older to learn? Not at all. I can guarantee if he walks into Kindergarden at 5 or 6 years old and sees all the other kids using a real cup? He'll figure it out. It's like potty training: if you feel ready to help him, and he (or she) is acting interested, give it a shot! If all else fails, they'll get wet and you can try again in a couple of days or so. No harm, no foul. It's not going to scar him (or her) for the rest of their life if he doesn't get off the sippy cup right this second!

Now....if it feels right to you. I think no later than shortly after their 3rd birthday they should be using regular cups. It depends on the kid for exactly when. My 2 year old runs around non stop and if I didn't keep a sippy cup of water out for him to carry around, he would be getting dehydrated. At this point, I don't think that it is necessary to take it away.
If you are still using the spill proof kind, you could either take the piece out that makes it spill proof or buy non-spill proof. I think this is a good transition, since they have to learn to exercise more control. If they have it tipped in their mouth, it's going to come out even if they aren't sucking and if they don't pay attention to how they are setting it down, they will spill a little. But at the same time, if they accidentally drop it, not all of the contents of the cup are going to spill out.

However inconvenient it may be, now is a good time. If you just can't give up the mess free sippy yet, try a sippy cup geared towards older toddlers. They make cups that are spill proof and have a lid like a regular cup so your toddler learns how to drink from the rim.

How well your two-year-old use a regular cup would be the determining factor. Children learn to do things at different times, some things aren't worth rushing. It is not going to impede your child's development if he/she uses the sippy cup for an extended period. Just start helping him/her with using a regular cup.

When they are coordinated enough to stop spilling stuff.

You can help them by showing them how to use a real cup while sitting at the table or in their highchair/booster chair. If your toddler has been accustomed to walking around the house with their sippy cup, you'll have to break that habit too unless you like grape juice stains on your furniture.

in basic terms enable her have water at nighttime - which will ease your tooth concerns a minimum of... and it does not flavor candy/yummy, so in line with threat she'll finally provide up desiring it. I kinda think of sippy cups are a competent concept interior the sunlight hours, at 2 years previous it somewhat is in all threat combating a good number of spills & messes! If she's sturdy with a common cup, in line with threat she does not prefer one nonetheless - some young little ones are extra coordinated that way than others. :)

now! I recommend this @ 1 rather then even putting them on the sippie cup. The sooner they learn, the sooner they will be able to use a cup in the first place.

When there's nothing left to stain anyway.

LOL, sorry, but I had one till I was a least five or seven, on occasion. I was the oldest, so it was necessarily my spills that were the problem.

My brother was obsessed with sippy cups forever, but grew out of it on his own. I have friends that still use them cause they are cute.

If you see that your toddler is starting to grab other people's drinks that do not have a top, try to give your child a small cup without a top, but put water in it as it can get messy! Your child will start to learn that they can't tip too far without getting wet! I would probably start now (if you see that they can hold a glass without handles). Have fun!
