Am I truly the only athiest here who does not bash other people about their beliefs?? Most athiests boast a live and let live attitude, but when a Christian posts a question, it seems to me that the athiests attack like wolves, and vice versa. Is there such a thing as disagreeing in a classy way anymore?

Really, do we all have to be so nasty to eachother? Am I really the only one who absorbs the opinions of others, learns from them, and yet still maintains my system of belief? I just think we should be able to disagree with out being so condescending.

Italian Man Man Man,
See!! That's what I'm talking about. What do my beliefs, or lack thereof, matter to you that you would take the time to insult them? It's completely ludicris.

You're absolutely right, yes. I for one, appreciate the thoughtful question because I am a Christian, but would never judge you or anyone for your beliefs. Why? Because it doesn't effect me, or my life! I think sometimes people make a big deal out of things, especially things they don't understand, and perhaps think that it's so much easier to bash someone, then to accept them for what they are. The bottom line is that we're all human beings. It's just very sad that some people honestly get kicks out of judging and bashing someone else's beliefs when it's so much easier to say "I hear ya" and move on. I respect you, as an Atheist, and appreciate you bringing this up. Have a good one.

Edit: I see this also happens with my fellow Christians. Some of them actually go against their beliefs and claim if you don't believe then you're going to hell. Or force their beliefs on you - so my note to fellow Christians is that it's frowned upon to judge others isn't it? Isn't it God's job to do that? Be careful how you answer her question.

I was just like you until I read The End of Faith and realized that there is a lot at stake and religion is dangerous.

Look at it this way. No one ever claims to have quit smoking because people nagged them to death, yet society has changed and every year there are fewer smokers. What has changed is the attitude toward smoking. It used to be accepted as just something people did that you had to live with. We took a "live and let live" attitude toward it.

Religion is far more dangerous than smoking to the long term health of the human race.

Depends on your view of bashing; I will defend my beliefs with logic, evidence, and reasoning. If they find that offensive... Then I think they need not attempt to debate me on morals, ethics, or other issues. Otherwise, I never bring it up.

But I agree, many of us lack the etiquette to debate like they weren't prowling wolves --though, I hate to say this, but it largely do to other people's attitudes toward us. I can count on my hand how many people don't find it offensive, and I'd need all the hands in India to count off all the people who find it offensive.

Well Rachel, no. You are not the only atheist. And as far as the rest of your question, let me say this; The problem is that everyone has forgotten that the purpose or goal of debate / discussion / rhetoric is the pursuit of truth. It is supposed to be so much more than just proving your point.

well, religion, politics, abortion, ect... are very touchy subjects,
unlike you( I am a christian) and thats ok, also (unlike you) most atheists are very angry, and down right ugly with those who beleive different. we are called bible bangers, bla bla bla, it does say in the bible that christians WILL BE scutinized, and critisized. this is happening so it must be true,(in my opinoin), at least thats what i beleive. thanks for not attacking me for my beleifs,, you have the right to be an atheist,, as I have the right to a christian....and yes,, wheres the class? every one thinks their way is the right way, but it's NOT the only way. i guess i would rather have faith and believe that GOD exsists and go to heaven, than to take the chance of not beleiveing, and finding out it was all true,,and it to be to late.

I am. I am not. That is ME. I maintain responsibility for my choices and beliefs and seek to continue to learn as much as I am able before I speak of that which I am not certain. I make mistakes. I am still human. The metamorhposis has just begun.

I call lies lies. I actually encountered a Creationist argument that was based on personal opinion and stated as such. It was nice to be able to be civil.

Maybe you're just the only nice person of any religion or non-religion. The only one who doesn't have any grudges or hard feelings. The only one who doesn't care about the ignorance of others, and who doesn't let it grate on your nerves. I think all of us have at least a little chip on our shoulders - why else would we be drawn to this forum to pick on each other?

As long as nobody's causing harm or suffering via their writing/speech (and it has to be obvious) I don't call anyone on it, but then I'm Buddhist although essentially atheist by philosophy.
