I'm a Christian, and have atheist friends. All of the atheists I know who have kids are raising their kids to be atheists. They're not teaching the kids all of the tenets of the various world religions and saying, "now make up your own mind," and taking them around to the services of various religions to learn more about them, but are instead telling the kids that believing in deities is hogwash. That's their right as parents. My Wiccan friends are raising their children as Wiccans, the Muslims as Muslims, and the Hindus as Hindus. It isn't exactly unnatural for people to raise their children with their own values. Why is it supposed to be so different for Christians? My family wanted to raise me not only in their own ethnic and cultural heritage, but in their religious heritage, as well.

We have to teach them the best way we can.
My kids are out of high School and I am darn glad that they believe in God and have faith.
They are as well.
When they grow up, they make their own choices.
Do you wait until your kids are old enough before teaching them not to hit others? What if they really WANT to hit others? How about potty training, maybe they will want to grow up and not pee in a toilet?
What about teaching them to read? Maybe they want to be illiterate? Why should they not have that opportunity?
Children have a choice. They are exposed to sex and violence all day every day. We as parents have to counter with something.
But we are not brain washing.
My point is that kids ARE being taught, and if anyone is brainwashing it is our society and consumerism, from the time they are born they are exposed to buy this, eat that, this will make you happy all you have to do is send $$$$, You need a fancier pair of shoes, you have to have a new purse, you NEED to eat a happy meal.
Then when they get older it is, sex will make you happy, be thin at all costs, Rich is good and will make you happy, drink and smoke dope just like the celebrity you worship, while you are at it buy her album and her line of clothes.
So if you think your kids are "thinking for themselves" you are wrong.
Peace!

I taught religious education to pre-scholars & kindergardners last year. Most of their parents were non-religious, but getting educated at the RCIA class (same time).
I was mainly a baby sitter and played by singing, reading stories, and making crafts. I found that these childreen (with little exposure to Catholosism) were extra-ordinarilly gifted spiritually and religiously. They knew more than their parents. They taught there parents, & challenged me as an instructor. When I asked their parents who taught them this stuff, they didn't have a clue.
So, I think since they're still young, they hear God clearier than adults. I now look at the Bible stories and see that it has always been the childreen who save the parents.

I grew up in a home where Christianity was considered a joke. Occasionally, my mother would talk to some christian friends, but would always find some excuse to reject their ideas.
It wasn't until I became an adult when I finally heard the go spell and received Christ as my Lord and Savior.
I only wish I had known of Him when I was growing up maybe I would have had a happier childhood.

It is the responsibility of every parent to teach the children about God. It's not called brainwashing.
If that is brainwashing, why does it need to stop there? Anything a parent does, like cooking a certain meal, buying a certain toy is all brainwashing.
Kids, have the option of growing up, and chosing their own ideals.

first of all, that is the most judgmental comment i have ever heard.
second of all, you teach your children what you feel is true and correct. in all aspects of your life.
don't you make your children eat their veggies? don't you forbid them from playing with knives?
why, don't you just let them decide for themselves?
i am christian, i take my children to church and i teach them that god is real... i teach them this because i feel that it is true and what would be best for them.
when they are old enough, to decide for themselves... then they can!
we all have to make that choice. it's a personal decision.

Yes, it's absolutely wrong. While it's great that you were able to make your own decision, the majority of people don't. The simple fact is that a child brought up in a certain religion is far more likely to follow that religion than any other. Anyone who tolerates that practice is opposed to religious freedom.

If Atheists have babies, do you think it is wrong for them to brain wash them into not believing in God? Some little Atheists grew up to be Christians.

Is it better to "brainwash" them into thinking some theory full of holes is fact or "brainwash" them about what they know about God, is one better than the other?
