I think the steroid scandal - many rose growers are giving their flowers steroids, to improve their size and win contests.
It's a silent killer.

here are my suggestions:
1. Discuss the Rubisco (its a key enzyme that increases the organic matter of the plant) with the differences between carboxylase for the Calvin cycle and oxygenase for photorespiration.
2. Discuss the different ways of assimilating Carbon dioxide with the C3 pathway, C4 pathway, and CAM.
3. You could also dicuss the photoperodism of plants.
4. Plus, the defense mechanisms of plants. ^_^

Anything to do with herbalism and the medicinal use of plants would be interesting as science has begun to re-acknowledge the efficacy of plants. Chimps and gorillas choose particular plants for health reasons.
Or plant extracts in cosmetics/beauty products as there is a huge popular market for these products and a lot of them claim to do miracles.
Climate change and plant distribution and it's consequences for the future (depends on where you live - I'm in swampland - U.K)
Or the methods plants use to protect themselves from predators - appearance, scent, colour e.t.c
Have you seen "The secret life of plants" by the BBC with David Attenborough - bloody amazing stuff, lots of food for thought.
