HAHA, do not listen to lindseyinlove, waayyy wrong. A Psychiatrist is someone with a M.D. - in other words not anyone can become one, only a medical doctor. They can prescribe medication, but typically they are only going to prescribe psychotrophic drugs because thats their speciality. They will sometimes sit and talk with you, but mainly to diagnose you and check your side effects of medication and stuff. A psychologist is someone with a masters degree (I would say also licensed) or higher (example PhD) who will diagnose you and do therapy with you. In somes states they can prescribe medication also, but normally they do not have the license to do so. I would recommend seeing both. Let both of them know about each other, they will want the appropriate consents for medical releases to be signed so they can communicate with each other about you. Some practices have both people in them. They will basically do a team approach with you, one will prescribe medication, the other will help monitor and treat your problems through psychotherapy. And trust me, a lot of people "think" they know their problems, but a therapist can help. Both are equally qualified to treat problems, they just go about it different ways. I say the most effective treatment for any kind of psychological problem, is both medication and psychotherapy.

a psychologist generally handles the counseling part of therapy, and psychiatrist handles the medicine. It isn't black and white in terms of knowledge, as psychologists on their own or through education know quite a bit about medicine and the medical aspects of psychology, and psychiatrists can be very well trained in psychotherapy. There are some psychiatrists who prefer to medicate only when absolutely necessary, and use other therapy methods to help people.

There are a relatively small number of people who are both (meaning they have separate psychology and medical degrees) and thus have the credentials of M.D., Ph.D. Otherwise, psychologists are titled with Ph.Ds, and psychiatrists as M.Ds.

I would say a psychiatrist because they will be able to give you counseling, but a psychologist will be able to pinpoint your illness better than a psychiatrist.

Psychiatrists gives feedback and talks with you. A psychologist listens and diagnoses you.

PS. Anyone can become a psychiatrist, but you need a master's degree to become a psychologist and to prescribe medicine you need a PhD. Hope this helps with your selection.

AHHHH-----An M.D can only prescribe limited drugs (tier I) like vicodin and less powerful. PhD can prescribe all tiers (Tier I, II, III)

I'd go see the Scycriatist. Find a good one who will do some blood work before putting you on any kind of meds.
These kinds of problems could be caused by a simple chemical imbalance.
