I live in Washington state and frequently go to British Columbia. Both have banned smoking from indoors, and even though I'm a smoker, I understand why they do it. The problem is, at clubs and bars smoking is definitely part of the experience for a lot of people though. It does force people to leave the building. Sorry, but nothing's gonna stop me from having a cigarette when I'm trashed.

One of my favorite parts about going to Europe was being able to smoke inside. In restaurants, in bars, at clubs... even at the airport. I miss it.

Here in Canada we have had a ban in public places for over 5 years, and it is getting tougher, at one time you could go outside and stand in front of the building and smoke, now it has to be 30 feet from the enterances, about 10 years ago when the cigar craze was big places went and invested in big bucks to have smoking bars, now they have no place to go.

With the US, as I have observed they have a number of states and citys that have total bans, partial bans, no bans and some have not even started. I live not far from Buffalo NY and there they have a gone partially smoke free.

But as time goes on here in Canada, there is a threat because of the cars and people driving with mobile phones, to ban the use of them and smoking to keep there eye on the road, as time progresses the smokers will have gotten use to the ban and just buck up or maybe even quit, the Queen did??

I moved from a state where you could smoke anywhere to California, where there's no smoking inside establishments and anwhere within 20-100'. Not even an outdoor patio of a restaurant most of the time. That just depends on the establishment, but definitely not inside. A lot of bar and restaurant owners put covers over the patios so if they allow it, people can go outside and not have to smoke in the rain.

I got used to it in about a month. It's really no big deal.

The non-smokers love it Booooooooo and the smokers hate it!! I think bars should choose the be smoking or non smoking. The damn non smokers are taking over. Some bars here in Cali allow smoking until 10 pm, then you have to go outside.

It's not fair, we're treated like second class citizens. Whats next smokers enter through the back door? Why not send us the the back of the bus why don't ya!!

This guy once had the NERVE to sit near me in the smoking section and asked me to put it out. I told him I was sick of his kind going everywhere thinking they can tell people what to do and if he had a problem then move somewhere else!

Bastards!!!!!!!

I think indoor smoking bans are great. In my state, Washington, there's no smoking allowed in any public/commercial building or within 25 feet of the entrance. Before the ban, I hated going to bars because of the stink. Now they smell much better and I enjoy going out.

Now if only there were a smoking ban in outdoor public places, that would be excellent. It would probably not get enough support in the legislature to get enacted into law though. What a shame.

Ohio just started a smoking ban in public places this year. Some bars are building outdoor areas so everyone can smoke.

I understand both sides. You should be subjected to billowing smoke just because you want to have a drink, but you also shouldn't be thrown outside just because you want to smoke. They just passed a new law in my town where you can't smoke in any public places, and you have to be at least 30 feet away from building entrances. I know it's a health concern, but seriously, if we keep out everything "bad" from every being around us, then we'll all eventually die of the smallest cold! We need to keep our immune systems strong, it's like training for war!!! but in our bodies. :)

It is a great idea.

Yes land of the free!

What is freedom if you (a smoker) infringes upon mine a nonsmoker? Do you mind if I coat you with the stink of my beer or pour it up your nose?

This is the best solution for all. Perhaps in the future buildings will be designed with wonderful exhaust systems that pull the smoke up and out so it is not infringing upon anyone.

Happened here long time ago. In NY and NJ you can't even smoke in an outside sports arena.

They are trying to ban smoking in automobiles.
