Technically a jpeg is a bitmap image bit we wont go into that. Convert to a jpeg if possible, jpeg is more recognized and easyer to deal with. You can convert the image by opening it in just about any photo editing program, I think even paint in windows and then "save as" and from the menue choose jpeg. In some casses you can also just change the extension, mainly when saving an image such as mypicture.bmp to mypicture.jpg you can try it and see what happens.

Use jpeg, why complicate things by using bitmap? They will both last just as long, not sure I understand that part of your question.

Is it easier to type "eye" rather than the correct "I"?

Some sites will accept bitmap, some won't.
