I agree with you that many Indians think they will be stronger than China and maybe they think this is because they speak english. I hope you will see the flaw.
Only a very small minority of Indians speak english and some of them speak hinglish.
I do not think english is an important element here.
If I had to take a bet, I would say China is going to win. I did not say that would be my choice.
I guess the problems in China are bigger than the problems in India. But in China there is more effort and determination to tackle the problems and consensus at the top level (though this is relative). In India there is much more chaos and there is hardly any unity.
Last but not least: China has enough money to buy the economy of North and South America. They have already started buying western banks.
edit: And they have bought nearly everything they could buy in MyanMar. Look at s world map and colour MyanMar the same shade as China. You will see what I mean.
India has missed enormous chances and will do so again. The egotism of the rich and their determination not to lose their comfortbable position is the greatest stumbling block for the development of India.
Edit: Felicity you are right, to include Brazil, but I saw this question as a China vs. India thing. I think it would be wonderful if Brazil would come up with a new model after the havoc greed and speed have caused in Asia.
The language is a problem for the chinese.
At the moment millions of chinese are learning foreign languages. I read somewhere (sorry no source) that there are more chinese learning thai than thai students at thai universities.
More and more international events use chinese as on of the languages.
After all, the language did not stop the japanese to develop a more successful economy than India.
Edit: Ryan, I agree with you 100% that Britain has a fine model, but I would not ay that about the ridiculous copy the Indians have produced. It might be a look alike, but the motherboard, the processor and even the plugs are different.
As for the army and the navy. They are indeed very big, but their function is in the first place budgets and commissions. Try to find the story about the scrapped airplane carrier they bought about 10 years ago. You will understand.
edit: Ricmon87: India boasts indeed to be the worlds biggest democracy. It is very well known that Indians worship the Guinness book of records. For that reason only, I will grant them the title. But if a country with 300 million people starving, while the rich throw the money around like water, is called a democracy, I guess there is something wrong with our definition of democracy.
I hope we can agree on this.
Have a good day, wherever you are.

Hum...that's quite a rant. You are right, India lost the boarder war. The leadership did not believe China would really attack them, and they were not prepared with troops in place, or mobile reserves that could be moved into place quickly. So, it was all over before India could actually respond. That is not to say the Indian troops who faced the Chinese were not brave, nor that they did their best. They were simply out numbered and unprepared because the politicians (and military leaders) had misread the Chinese intentions for saber-rattling. That said, India and China are the two most populous nations on earth. India is the one nation that could almost match the Chinese man for man, and in a few more years will probably be THE most populous nation on earth. India tends to view Pakistan as enemy number one, and that is the boarder they have their best (and most) troops deployed on. It was how the troops were deployed, not the number of overall troops or the equipment they had that lost the war.

There are three contenders: China, India and Brazil.
I'd bet on India. China is going to have big problems as the privileged few flaunt their new-found wealth and the under-privileged start to ask about their rights.
The only Portuguese speaking computer specialists I've met came originally from Goa, and communication is paramount.
India does have the advantage of speaking English. Indians are fantastic in computing and telecommunications and, as the largest democracy in the world, India has the advantage of being mainly Hindu. If I've only got a bicycle in this life, I might have a private jet in the next. This might just prevent revolt until the internal problems are sorted out.

The English factor is important, but other English cultural influences are important. The Indians have the benefit having experienced the fine English governmental institutions for centuries and have modeled their government accordingly. This means their legal system is far more similar to the powerful English speaking world. Also, their armed forces are built along the Anglo model, which means they have developed a very sophisticated navy and air force.

Whatever makes you think that knowing English has anything to do with national strength.... is beyond me....
Both China and India are great countries and powers. What matters most is that their respective rise will balance the world as it is now. In a decade or two, with these countries' progress, it will be a better place, I hope.

English has nothing to do with economoc progress, and your question is very biased.
1. India has a great film industry, bigger than Hollywood.
2. Merchandise is very beautiful and everyone you see will at least be interested in their merchandise.
3. Food is awesome.
Their economy is slowly rising, and just because China is a great nation doesn't make it any greater than whatever other countries there are. It's all about economical competition; not language.
And yes, Indians do speak better English.

Perhaps it has more to do with their increased industrialisation and easier relations with the west, what with India not being communist and all.
