Why if atheists feel they know the undisputed truth Do they feel their theory needs defending? I don't waste a lot of time trying to disprove something I don't believe is real. That's a little nonsensical.I make up my own mind and don't concern myself with what others believe.Yes, I'll listen to their opinion and state my views, but I don't feel the need to disprove what they feel the truth is.

Everyone has the right to try and influence legislation in this country. Either through voting and/or lobbying.

No because they think they already have all the answers, they don't need any more which is what religion gives us.

When the president says we don't belong in America, and we are discriminated against by the religious majority when we let our true stance be known, we have a reason to be upset and try to help those who don't understand us and judge us, learn about us and what we are and what we aren't. As Americans we're told we have freedom, and tolerance is something we should all show towards eachother. We grew up with all these ideals and with an education that led us to the conclusions we've made about religion after much thought and searching. Why are we frowned upon for doing what we've always been told is the right thing to do, figure things out for ourselves and use our minds? Why do so many people take the very old stories written by a biased few men who thought slavery was O.K. and women were property, accepted as "god's word" and revered and followed so blindly, while questioning it is looked at as wrong?

Anyone, atheist or not, who thinks that they have all the answers and know all the undisputed truths, is full of it.

That said, though, if you "don't waste a lot of time", and "don't feel the need to disprove", then don't. It's really that simple. If it's really not a concern of yours, it's not even worth posting as a question, eh?

Religion is a moot issue to a lot of atheists. Which atheists, specifically, are you addressing this to, and how were they trying to disprove something they don't believe is real?

Atheists don't have the answers to anything... the difference between atheists and religious types is that atheists are more skeptical as to the origins of things. We do not conform to this non-sensical belief that everything in this universe was magically created by some giant invisible guy who's got nothing better to do than watch everyone on earth to make sure they're not masturbating, having out-of-marriage sex, or molesting animals.

I could ask you the same thing though..... why do christians (and other religious types) feel THEY know the undisputed truth that there is a god or that everything in their religion is infallible?

We don't need to defend our ideas/beliefs UNLESS the religious types (who are, right now, the majority) try to ignore OUR rights by pushing THEIR beliefs on everyone including those who don't believe what they believe.

It's funny because christians and religious types push and persecute and bash and belittle everyone who is not the same as they are....... but when they get pushed back they cry and whine about persecution and they criticize us for criticizing them.

They're all the same. They all think the same. They've all been programmed in the same way. If you want to cease the expansion of rational thinking and logic in favor of believing in fairy tales and ancient superstitions that is your prerogative..... but if you're going to talk down to me or treat me differently because I don't believe what you believe that is when I am going to "waste my time" defending my beliefs because I have a right to believe what I want to believe whether it conforms to your beliefs or not. Just because your cult may have the "majority" status, that doesn't make you right or better than me. So get off your pedestal. When the religious types will "live and let live" i will stop "defending" my beliefs.... but until then I will continue to speak out against the stupidity of their superstitions.

Perhaps because their theories are under constant attack? Some also feel, like many other religions that they need to "save" people, just like Christians and muslims and the like try to convert other people. In an atheists mind, if you are referring to someone who is more scientifically inclined and does not believe in a greater power, then the would want to save people from being restricted from thinking by being pushed under one religion.

However, I do not think their is really an "Atheist". One might not believe in a God, but those that hold to the big bank and evolution, definitely believe in a greater power. It might not be sentient, but Quantum Physics could be their god. So, another argument I suppose, is Atheist even the real term?

The origins or life are not undisputed and Atheists don't have the answers yet.

Scientists have many Ideas, but none that have been conclusively proved.

But you are correct about Religion being a moot issue, however, when religious people legislate morality and dictate education, it is my duty to step into the void and tell you, that you are wrong.

Also, just like you feel you have a moral duty to spread the love of God, in order to save me. I feel I have a moral duty to save you from Christianity.

Your beliefs cause you to strive for an afterlife, at the expense of your current life. My reasoning tells me there is no afterlife, as there is no evidence for the existence of God. So I have a moral duty to help you understand you are waisting the only life you have, and are enticing others to do the same.

Non religious people, like doctors, scientists, physicists, technologists etc, provide tangible things that help mankind and are good for society. Religion provides descent, divide and wars.

Some say it gives them hope, but if you think about it, in order to have that hope, they have to believe that every non-believer will be tortured for eternity. They get their hope at the expense of eternal pain for a majority of humanity. It is a cruel and sad way to live.

I wish the best for you and am only trying to help you out of your destructive belief system.

So, you're saying the Religion and Spirituality section should be used exclusively by weak agnostics?
And what do you mean about not disproving something you don't believe is real? Isn't that the only logical instance in which you would attempt to disprove something?

Religion is delusional nonsense that rots the mind and as such should be combatted as a matter of preserving integrity of intellect. However, after 9/11, it should be clear to even the most severely deluded and dull witted that religious belief is a mental cancer that has no place in a modern society.

Your question is ridiculous.

No atheist would be remotely justified in claiming that THEY have the answers to ANYTHING. This is precisely because atheism is not and does not have anything to do with a religion.

Hence there is no belief, of any kind that could be described as atheist, because by definition an atheist is one that LACKS a belief and that is ALL that constitutes an atheist.

It is only in western countries, especially America, where a debate would be framed in such a spurious way.

1.) Atheists don't "feel they know the undisputed truth". Atheists believe they have the best explanation that fits all the facts we currently observe; and are willing to change that opinion if and when new facts come to light.

2.) It'd be one thing if it were a simple difference of opinion, or if theists confined their indulging in imaginary friends and Invisible Sky Fairies to their own homes or their clubhouse with the big pointy thing on top. But that's NOT what they do, is it? They want everyone ELSE to believe in their Sky Fairy (often on pain of death); and they want to make secular laws based on what THEY claim their imaginary friend says he wants.

1. I do? Guess you know me better than I do then. What a load of crap.

2. I don't care what you believe, I want you to butt out of everyone elses lives.

3. Butt out. Just butt out. Don't try to get your religion legalized through politics and law (ex. homosexuality, abortion), don't try to get your religion taught in schools (ID), or prayer forced in schools (but only Christian prayer, everyone else has to do it privately).

4. I'm all for equality, and just because you Christians are losing your power, doesn't mean you should be freaking out about it.

BUTT OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES LIVES.
