About 4 or 5 days ago my sister noticed that her dog was being lathargic and had "funny" looking eyes. He has been eating but not drinking, even from, his favorite, the bathtub. He started to lose weight and biting at his skin (there is nothing visible on his skin and he has been given frontline so it's not fleas). She took him to the vet and they drew blood, gave him an IV to rehydrate him and put him on antibiotics. He has been on the antibiotics for two days now and he's still acting the same and he is becoming dehydrated again. She tried to call the vet and can't get an answer from anyone about the blood tests...she's called 4 times. Does anyone know what his symptoms might mean? She's freaking out and I can't even begin to think of what may be wrong with him. Thank you!!!

Ok, I'm asking for opinions on his actual illness so if you don't know, please don't answer. I'm just trying to help out my sister and thanks for the update on my spelling. We know how to handle the vet and she is taking him back right after work. Once again, if you don't have an answer that is regarding his illness...please don't answer at all. Thank you!

Umm. I work for a vet, and there is no reason why they should NOT give you guys an answer about the bloodwork. Make sure not to be hostile with the staff at the clinic though, sometimes they can get very busy, and noone but the doctor is usually allowed to talk to the client about results. If you are really afraid that the dog is getting worse, you should contact another vet and see what they say to do. Make sure the info gets transfered from the current vet to the new vet, including blood results and any x-rays that may have been done. Sometimes antibiotics especially in seviere cases of infection can take days to work, but you can't have the dog dehydrate during that time. We put dogs on fluids when they are very lethargic, and the blood results usually give us a guideline of how long to keep them on fluids, and what medication to give if there is a specific infection shown on the results. So I highly doubt they didn't do testing. Talk to them again, and if unsatisfied, Switch Vets.!

The correct spelling is Shih Tzu.
Shih Tzu is pronounced as She Zu (long e, long u)
The "t" is silent !

If you have a problem with a vet, get a second opinion.
I have done this before and received much better results. Vets are like doctors, there are good ones and bad ones.

If the vet will not give you an answer over the phone, pay him a visit. An irate customer in the waiting room will be taken care of quickly!

PS. Take the dog.

You have to take charge of your own dog.. I have a male that hurt himself.. I called the vet.. they were too busy to see me.. So you know what.. I put him in the car, I drove to the office, I went in and they saw him.. Turns out they were wrong, they weren't as busy as they thought.. IF you think your dog is sick.. and it sounds like he is.. Then get him to the vet whether or not you can get thru on the phone.. You want to be the person that says ' oh, if I was able to get into the vet, my dog wouldn't be dead ' ??? NO.. Take charge and do something about it instead of sitting around trying to get thru on the phone.. If I waited around waiting to get past a busy signal my whole life, I would still be sitting on the phone waiting.. It's your dog, take charge and get something done or he is going to die.. If he has been given IV and he is still dehydrated, then he needs more help.. Get him the help..
