What in the world has happened to this tree? It is next to 3 other pines, but this is the only with the problem. The holes start at the very bottom and go up pretty far, they are well formed and some even in straight lines. They are only about 1/4 inch deep. Some of the holes have caused tons of sap to seep out. Here are some images:

Is it infested with something? If so, what is it…should the tree be removed? If it’s disease will it spread?

Looks like a sapsucker has been at work around there. That is a type of bird. The fact that is only attacking the one tree is odd, but not a cause for concern. It won't kill the tree. Scroll down on this site:

and you will see pictures of a yellow-bellied sapsucker -- and one of a tree that it is feeding on.

I wouldn't rule out infestation (I am not an expert), but woodpeckers can often make series of holes that look like that (they usually go in straight lines like that).
