Go with a Ford Escape Hybrid, or a Toyota Highlander Hybrid if you need an even bigger one.

Lexus RX350 is a very roomy, user friendly SUV. I've owned a Mercedes-Benz ML before and it is big but is terrible on gas since its heavy. Also with a Mercedes, if there is a problem with the car, you have a pay a ton of money to fix it. (only mercedes can fix it since its all computerized) Go for the Lexus RX350. It is very good on gas (takes regular gas too compared to the ML), has excellent acceleration, handles like car and the leather is a lot more comfortable. The lexus even tells you how many km you can still drive so there is no need to worry when the low gas light turns on. I have 2 RX330s. One has over 110,000 km on it and it still drives butter smooth and i've never ever encountered a problem with either one of them.

I believe the Chevrolet Equinox isn't too bad on gas. It's a smaller SUV and I believe as a 4 or 6 cylinder and only has like a 12 gallon tank.

Get a 2000-2001 used Jeep Cherokee Classic with the 4.0 L engine, it's better and less thirsty than the new ones and will only cost you less than $5K.
