They are in my mother's flower bed; however, she does not remember planting them. I assume they are weeds, but she does not want to pull them out until she knows.

The first one has spiked leaves and is growing upward only, here are 2 images:

The first one is clearly a weed and, in my case, had a damaging effect on nearby plants. The second looks like a wed similar to something I had as well. Where are you located? I don't know the names of either.

First one, definitely. Second one, most probably. I recognize the first from my mom's garden -- those leaves are prickly, right? I think it may be a type of thistle.
