Windows XP is an operating system from Microsoft. There are different versions of XP; Home, Pro, Media.

An operating system is the 'traffic cop' inside your computer that directs everything you do...from handling keyboard inputs, to putting and retrieving data from your disk drive, to sending stuff to your screen...and so forth.
