Normally HP has this fascilities in there scanner, if not than with photoshop you can enlarge the size. Open pic in photoshop Click on image menu choose image size inhance size but aspect ratio should be locked.

Well. When the picture comes up on your screen after the scanner is done with it, save it, then exit it out. Then go to paint, open it, and resize it....then save it again....or you could upload to photobucket and there is a resize button

If you scanned the picture, they'd be in your computer, and you can do whatever you want with it with a picture / photo editing program.
As you did not describe how did you scan them, there'd be no way to tell where you did go wrong, or even if you did!
