Yes you can refinish it. Lowes and Walmart sells a refinishing Paint for Ceramic and Fiberglass Bath tubs. I bought a 1927 House and it had an old Bath Tub in it that was in bad shape. I wanted to maintain the Character of the Antique Look, so I bought one of the refinishing Kits and Painted it and it turned out Lovely..

You can refinish the tub as many have told you. You can either have it done by someone or you can buy kits at a hardware store. Rustoleum Tub and Tile Refinishing kits works really well and looks beautiful when it's done but is a pain to work with and really stinks (as most of them do because they are typically epoxy). Read the directions carefully and follow them closely, make sure the kit is for a bathtub, kits just for fiberglass generally don't work well on bathtubs. Also know that typically with these kits once you're done you can't use the tub for at least 3 days while it dries. So, make sure you can afford to not use the tub for that long.

Many stores carry tub refinishing kits. Be aware though, you must follow the directions to the letter. Prep is the most important part. If the surface is not perfectly clean, the paint will peel off in a short amount of time. Around the drain is usually the hardest to clean and the first place it peels. Good luck.

We had the same horrible yellow, also on the tile surround. There's a product at most home improvement stores (epoxy based, I think) that you can roll/brush on, and it's labeled for exactly this use. You must follow the instructions carefully, which normally call for cleaning the tub and tiles, then cleaning again with rubbing alcohol...but it really works. It's best to do the corners/hard-to-reach spots first with a brush, then use a roller to mask the brush marks, and get enough for 2 coats. We did ours about 2 years ago, and it's used now almost every day with no chips, cracks, or bubbles. Make sure you give it plenty of time to cure before using though.

I had my tub and the tile around my shower professionally refinished. It was expensive, but worth it because the tub was an old porcelain one. It now looks brand new. The process only took 2 days, as opposed to the longer process of tearing out the tub, setting a new one, and retiling everything.
The company was Miracle Tub, or Miracle Finish, or something like that. Plus, they use less offensive chemicals than other companies, so there wasn't such a bad odor during the process.
