This depends on whether this is a young cat going out for the first time or a rescue cat/older cat, or whether you have moved home.

Please make sure he or she is neutered and vaccinated.

Firstly I keep my cats in for the first four weeks. Then I take them out into the garden wearing a cat harness. They dont like it but its only for the first couple of times.

Then on the big day, I butter their paw's. This is an old wives tale, but I find it works. When you let them out they tend to sit in the garden and lick the butter off their paws. While they are doing this they are taking in all the sounds and scents of your garden.

Make sure they are either micro-chipped or wearing a collar with a disc showing your name and telephone number.

Leave the cat-flap with a peg holding it open or leave the back door or window open so the cat can get back in.

In my opinion this is the best you can do. All my cats have come back and I have rescued many over the years.

Good luck to you and your cat.

I moved house a few years ago and had opened the window a little. My Phoenix saw this and fitted out through the smallest gap possible! We'd only been living there a day. She came back. Cats aren't silly creatures they know what side of their butter is bread. Just relax if they love you or what they have in their bowl they'll be home! I always make sure mine are all in by 9 at night for tea then bed more accidents happen at night with cats so don't take that risk.

You just have to trust your cat. Keep the cat in for a while, put a collar and tag on it just in case. Feed it the same time every day and this way the cat should come back home at the same time for feeding. I let both of my cats out at 10pm and bang on 6.30am they are waiting at the door ready to come in and get fed.

We also have 6 cats at work and they come and go as they please. The 4 kittens we have had since the were 1week old got let out after their vaccinations (about 10weeks old) and they have always gone out and played and come back for food and fuss (and especially if we are doing paper work! lol)

Establish a routine. Always feed her/him at the same time. They know when it's dinner time and will be sitting in front of the door. I got 4 cats and I let them out now and then (I live in the country and there's not much traffic).

I also agree with the other poster, show your cat lots of love and spend time with her/him. My cats always return back home.

If your cat stays out longer than usual, don't panic. They will come back, when they are hungry. LOL

Make sure to spay or neuter your pets, so they don't roam around for days or too far, looking for a mate.

Hi, When you first get a cat keep it in for a few weeks, so then it will get used to it's new surroundings and smells. When you do let it go out keep an eye on it at first and only let it out for a short period of time. Your cat will soon start to familiarise itself with the outside world. Give your cat lot's of Love and feed every morning and evening, your cat will come back to you. It is said a cat loves you more than you love it, i have one cat who loves being outdoors, he loves nothing more than me being in the garden with him, he does sleep indoors at night, i have always tried to keep my cat's in at night because that is the time mishaps happen, and they go wandering off. I have another cat that wouldn't thank you for being outdoors he is a house cat. Forgot to say have your cat neutered then they wont stray.

You listen to her when she talks, buy her fresh cut flowers every week, Take her out to nice restaurants and movies on date night. make good love to her and satisfy her every need and make your cat purrrr, Kiss her every so gently ever morning and when you see her after work or school, Buy her a nice item like shoes, purses, watches, clothes, jewels etc without her asking for them. cook for her sometimes, take her for long walks in the park holding hands, look her deep into her beautiful eyes and tell her you love her whenever it crosses her mind, always rub her sexy body to let her know she is the bomb to you, and hold her tight whenever you sleep to let her know she is safe in your arms. Your cat will always come home if you do these things.

Unless your talking about a kitty cat, feed them good and keep a fresh litter box and a couple of toys. I knew you were talking about a four legged cat I had to have a little fun with you this morning.

My cat comes home either when his stomach tells him it is time, if it starts to get cold or wet, or if he is just fed up of being outside He never goes to far anyway so if we want him to come back before he's ready we just go outside and call and he comes trotting up.

He also has a collar with our phone number on it and is microchipped.

Cats are smart, if you provide them with a comfortble home they will want to come back and you shouldn't have any trouble.

I don't need to worry about jess and woody not coming back 'cos I won't let them outside its way to dangerous for them.
Woody came a cropper with a car before i adopted him (from cats protection) and had to have a leg amputated as a result, poor boy -- but they are both very happy living with me!, well fed, loads to do(hundreds of toys and play centers/scratch posts), lots of love from me, and lots of warm sleepin places!!!!!

I don't know if any ones suggested it but I've seen people put butter on cats paws. It was suggested to my dad when he moved house with his cat, it worked to! His cat is an outdoor cat and when he wandered off with the butter on his feet, he came back soon after.

It's important to wash your cats feet after, it can ruin your floors :\

Make sure your cat is neutered and put your address and telephone number in it's collar. This is an old wives tale but they say if you put butter on your cat's paws, they will always find their way home!!!
