The format used on professional audio CDs is the "wav" format. When it is written to a CD, it is converted to have the "cda" format (the actual content of the file is still wav formt). If you use Windows Media Player to create an audio CD, it will convert to wav/cda for you as part of the burning process.

It is a .wav file and it is a cleaner file with higher quality sound and no compression. You can make these files if you would like, but MP3's sounds just as good basically, and they are a fifth of the size of a .wav file.

MP3 is popular cause it is smaller and downloadable. A full album would be 650 to 700 mb instead if 120 when you download it.
